Sergio Larrain a traversé la planète photographique tel une météorite. Son souci de pureté, son attrait pour la méditation, l’on conduit à s’isoler, après de nombreux voyages, en autarcie dans la campagne chilienne. De là il écrivait beaucoup, soucieux de la nécessité de faire évoluer la planète vers une prise de conscience générale, tout en continuant à aimer profondément la photographie. Sa pratique se limitait alors à quelques satori, purs moments d’éblouissements.Dans un article annonçant la mort du photographe dans Le Monde, en février 2012, Michel Guerrin écrivait : « Sergio Larrain photographie en noir et blanc, dans la rue surtout. Il découpe la lumière de telle façon qu’il donne l’impression que les jours sont plongés dans la nuit. Les gens sont comme des apparitions fantomatiques.Il prend des libertés rares pour embarquer le spectateur dans des compositions audacieuses et virtuoses, charnelles et bousculées, comme si on se trouvait sur un navire qui tangue : plongées, contreplongées, perspectives profondes, flous au premier plan, découpe violente de la lumière… »Les photographies de Sergio Larrain n’ont fait l’objet que de quatre livres de son vivant, et jamais aucune monographie complète n’a été publiée sur son travail. C’était son choix. Cet ouvrage, publié sous la direction d’Agnès Sire qui a entretenu une longue correspondance avec lui et œuvré, avec Magnum, à la préservation de son patrimoine photographique, vient combler ce manque. Deux grands axes dans cette monographie, l’Amérique latine et l’Europe : Le Machu Picchu, la Bolivie, le Chili, Valparaiso, Londres, Paris, l’Italie… une sélection de plus de 200 photographies.Mais cet ouvrage ne serait pas fidèle à cette personnalité hors du commun, si n’étaient pas reproduites quelques lettres essentielles, des dessins, des carnets de travail et quelques textes de sa main destinés à la méditation.

August Sander is considered to be one of the greatest portrait photographers of the early 20th century. His great photographic work will be celebrated by an exhibition of his most important vintage prints opening on September 7, 2009, at the distinguished Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson in Paris. One half of the images are his famous portraits, the other half are his relatively unknown, but very beautiful Rhineland landscapes and nature photographs from the 1930s. The images will be accompanied by a text by August Sander himself his famous radio speech about photography entitled Sehen, Beobachten und Denken (Seeing, Observing, Thinking). The images in the book will be reproduced from rare vintage prints in the highest possible quality. This collection will be the essential small edition of August Sander s photographs for years to come.

In the last years of the 1950s, Joan Colom spent every weekend exploring the "bas-fonds" of Barcelona, the Raval neighborhood known today as the Barrio Chino. Interest both in remaining discreet and in breaking with the aesthetic traditions of his elders caused him to begin working without aiming his camera; only while printing did he frame each image. On the street and in the darkroom, he saw himself as an impassioned witness to social theater and his work as a search for "images that touch me." His results were praised early on by personalities such as Ramon Massats and Josep Maria Casademont, who wrote in 1961, "with Joan Colom, we are entering a new phase of our history of photography." These classic images entwine the aesthetic of the 50s Modernist avant garde with the dark, pessimistic tradition of Franco's Spain; today, the image of the Barrio Chino is rooted in Colom's work.
