Revered as a father of modern photography, August Sander (1876– 1964) so refined the art of portraiture that his moving images of his fellow countrymen have been heralded both as an important sociological document and a photographic masterpiece. Featuring 60 subjects from August Sander's People of the 20th Century along with another 100 brilliant images from his large-scale project, this book presents a selection of the most stunning images from the photographer's monumental work. August Sander is one of the greatest photographers in international photographic history. With his seminal book People of the 20th Century, he set new standards in portrait photography. Sander's aspiration was to create a typological "composite image" of his time. The ambitious project began in the 1910s and was to occupy him through the 1950s. A novel feature of this book is that all the reproductions are based on vintage prints produced and authorized by August Sander himself. The croppings and the desired tonal values are authentically rendered here for the first time in the long publication history of Sander's brilliant portrait work. One continuous subject of Thomas Struth s complex photographic oeuvre is the group portrait. Initially, he photographed people from the circle of his close friends and acquaintances, who he asked to sit for him at least as duos. Soon the groups grew to feature entire families, families outside Europe, and from other social strata. Encounters with artists, collectors, museum staff all gave Struth an occasion to create group portraits that bear comparison with the great examples set by Velazquez through to Goya. Transposed onto a modern medium and set in our present world, Struth s large-format family portraits exhibit an undeniable representative character. The need to present oneself as an individual in the framework of a hierarchical order remains manifest even in the ostensibly most relaxed of groupings.

August Sander is considered to be one of the greatest portrait photographers of the early 20th century. His great photographic work will be celebrated by an exhibition of his most important vintage prints opening on September 7, 2009, at the distinguished Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson in Paris. One half of the images are his famous portraits, the other half are his relatively unknown, but very beautiful Rhineland landscapes and nature photographs from the 1930s. The images will be accompanied by a text by August Sander himself his famous radio speech about photography entitled Sehen, Beobachten und Denken (Seeing, Observing, Thinking). Bernd and Hilla Becher's photographic documentation of the abandoned and demolished Hannover Coal Mine resurrects the colliery before the viewer s eyes: the three winding towers spanning a period of about 100 years; the power station with its cooling towers; the adjacent coking plant; and the spectacular conveyor belts traversing the entire compound. 200 black-and-white photographs selected from a total of 600 negatives taken between 1971 and 1974 present panoramic views of the plant and its individual structures from several perspectives. The photographic narrative of entire plants has previously been given little notice in the reception of the Bechers work. Reminiscent of the documen tation of Zeche Hannibal published in 2000, the present volume is another important contribution to the interpretation of their oeuvre.

Judith Joy Ross has, over the past 30 years, come up with a very idiosyncratic view of average American daily life. In her hometown of Hazleton, Pennsylvania, she took pictures of schoolchildren in all the schools she had attended herself, creating a series of sensitive portraits that says a great deal about growing up, about equal opportunities that are equal in name only, and about life in the American heartland. Ross caused a stir in the 1990s with portraits she took in front of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington. The emotional breadth of responses on the faces of the anonymous visitors is stunning. Ross works using a plate camera, taking exclusively black and white pictures in the tradition of artists such as August Sander or Walker Evans, with his “documentary style”. This book presents Ross’ award-winning oeuvre comprehensively for the first time.

With People of the 20th Century, August Sander created a monumental work that is unique in the history of photography and a classic of photographic literature. Sander conceived this large-scale project, which he ultimately never completed, in the 1920s. He was to spend the rest of his life working on it, his objective nothing less than a complete typological portrait of contemporary society. Hundreds of portraits classified according to professional, social or family criteria were to provide a representative picture of the various social groups. He envisaged seven groups labeled: "The Farmer", "The Skilled Tradesman", "The Woman", "Classes and Professions", "The Artists", "The City" and--on the theme of age, illness and death--"The Last People". We have now condensed out 2002 seven-volume edition of the artist's complete oeuvre into one large volume presenting "the essential" People of the 20th Century.
