This book is a revised and enlarged version of the original maquette for Josef Koudelkas book Cikani (Czech for Gypsies), prepared by Koudelka and graphic designer Milan Kopriva in 1968, and intended for publication in Prague in 1970. However, Koudelka left Czechoslovakia in 1970, and the book was never published in that original form. Koudelkas stark images depict the poverty and clannishness of Gypsy life, but he does not present their situation as a social problem that should somehow be fixed. Instead, he shows the Gypsies as perpetual outsiders, and their lives as a primal mix of glee and wonder, sorrow and mystery. This extended version of the seminal 'Gitans, la fin du voyage' consists of 109 photographs taken between 1962 and 1971 in what was Czechoslovakia (Bohemia, Moravia and Slovakia), Romania, Hungary, France and Spain. Sociologist Will Guy, author of the text that accompanied the first publication of Gypsies, has contributed an updated essay, tracing the migration of the Roma from their original homeland in northern India, to their current status one that continues to be contested internationally.

D'abord ingénieur dans l'aéronautique, il s'est tourné entièrement vers la photographie à la fin des années 1960. Il reçoit la médaille d'or Robert Capa de l'Overseas Press Club pour ses photographies de l'intervention soviétique à Prague en 1968. En 1970, il fuit la Tchécoslovaquie comme réfugié politique et intègre la célèbre agence Magnum. En 1975, est publiée la première version de Gitans, la fin du voyage, suivie de plus d'une douzaine d'autres livres. Koudelka a remporté de nombreux prix dont le prix Nadar (1978), le grand prix national de la Photographie (1989), le grand prix Cartier-Bresson (1991) et le prix international de photographie de la Fondation Hasselblad (1992). Son travail a fait l'objet d'expositions importantes à Paris, New York, Londres et Amsterdam. Le ministère français de la Culture l'a fait chevalier de l'ordre des Arts et Lettres en 1992. Il partage aujourd'hui son temps entre Paris et Prague.

En 1986, il commence à utiliser un appareil photo au format panoramique et participe à la mission photographique de la DATAR, dont l’objectif est de «?représenter le paysage français des années 1980?». Il sillonne alors la France, puis le monde entier, pour rendre compte de l’influence de l’homme moderne sur le paysage. Le livre est composé de quarante photographies panoramiques choisies par l’artiste et François Hébel parmi les plus emblématiques de ce thème. Ces images, prises sur tous les continents, témoignent des grands travaux humains, allant des usines aux carrières, en passant par d’énormes complexes miniers et des zones abandonnées. Les photographies transportent le lecteur dans des zones inaccessibles et méconnues, entre désolation et curiosité, pour rendre compte de l’imposante réalité de l’industrie. Forte de cette esthétique photographique caractéristique du travail de Koudelka, cette selection donne à voir un imposant travail en noir et blanc. L’ouvrage paraît à l’occasion  de l’exposition éponyme au festival Foto/Industria de Bologne, biennale photographique internationale créée en 2013, où les expositions investissent la ville pendant près de trois mois.
