The important Neo-Expressionist painter, A.R. Penck, was born Ralf Winkler in Dresden, Germany, in 1939. As an adult, he was closely linked with other East-German exponents of the new figuration, including Jörg Immendorff and Georg Baselitz, all of whom were watched by the secret police and considered dissidents. In the late 1970s Penck's work was included in several shows in West Berlin, and he came to be seen as an important exponent of free speech in the East. Both the violence he witnessed in Dresden as a youth and the aggression and oppression of later twentieth-century politics have remained central themes in his work, which is known for its pictographic, Neo-Primitivist imagery of human figures and other totemic forms. This concise exhibition catalogue brings together works made from 1983 to 1989, so that key signature Standart figure paintings can be seen juxtaposed with some of the artist's less well known work. Essayist Siegfried Gohr writes, "Penck's dual gift, both intellectual and aesthetic, permits him to gaze fearlessly at phenomena from which others have long turned away, whether out of the inability to cope that leads to repression or out of the overconfidence that leads to hasty, noncommittal abstraction. Penck works against the illusions and delusions caused by the way things really are."

The ongoing relevance of Belgian painter René Magritte may lie in the semiotic character of his work and its ability to create chasms between the world, its surfaces and the signs we use to occupy it. Magritte's paintings offer a space for the viewer to contemplate the emptiness of signs and to locate that emptiness in a world we recognize--indeed, the artist relies on the props of normalcy in order to upend, invert and collapse them into the terra incognita where life leaves off and art begins. "The mind loves the unknown," he avowed, "it loves images whose meaning is unknown, since the meaning of the mind itself is unknown." In Attempting the Impossible we have a new definitive Magritte monograph, replacing David Sylvester's volume of the early 1990s. Featuring more than 300 works, it contains much unpublished material and includes chapters covering Magritte's photography, drawings and influence on German and American contemporary art. Each chapter opens with a close reading of a key work--such as "The Treachery of Images" ("This is not a pipe") of 1928-29--and a reconstruction of its intellectual and historical contexts. Art historian Siegfried Gohr examines Magritte's marriage and friendships, the phases of his work (from his sunlit Renoir period and his "période vache" to his bright and visually arresting postwar work, which had such an influence on the advertising industry), the Belgian roots of his wit and sensibility and his word paintings and investigations into the paradoxes of representation.

This beautifully designed catalogue, published to accompany the Winter 2007 exhibition of this important German neo-Expressionist's work at Nyehaus, New York, comes housed in a stunning monochrome cobalt-blue linen-bound clamshell box with the artist's name embossed upside down and inside out on the front cover. Inside is a Coptic-stitched monograph, exquisitely printed on lush paper, which features a selection of Baselitz's work from the 1960s and 70s--including oils on canvas, pastels, gouaches, and works in graphite, ink, crayon and other media. Designed by the prominent New York firm Helicopter, the book's cover typography conveys the characteristic disorientation that Baselitz's work induces when he inverts his work's subject matter in order to free up its content. Inside, texts are printed in both English and German, while the typefaces address Baselitz's struggle to reconcile his conservative German heritage with his contemporary sensibilities as an artist. One of the most creative artists of our century, Frederick Kiesler worked from the 1920s onwards as an architect, stage designer and environmental artist. His best-known works are still the Endless House project, the design of Peggy Guggenheim's Art of this Century Gallery in New York and the "Shrine of the Book," a sanctuary for the Dead Sea Scrolls in Jerusalem. Kiesler was also a prolific writer on design, architecture and creativity. His ideas of a total theater, of endless architecture and of sculpture inspired by organic forms have been a rich source of inspiration for subsequent generations of artists. Even 30 years after his death, his original, shrewd thinking lends his texts freshness, reflecting the temperament of a man who worked intensely and persistently on the project of a modern art that would not exhaust itself in rationalism and functualism. Although, during his lifetime, he was only well known among artists and architects, Kiesler can be numbered together with Duchamp among the most important innovators of art after 1900. His work is currently undergoing a critical resistance by architects and art historians, who will welcome this volume of writings. The selection combines writings from every branch of art and number of journal entries, as well as other unpublished texts and poems from his estate.

Per Kirkeby may be Copenhagen's best-known artistic export; born in 1938, he is still based in Denmark. Perhaps due to his doctorate in geology, the metamorphosis of nature has always been a key theme for Kirkeby. Early on, he was influenced by American Pop art and Minimalism, and in recent years, he has become involved with the tradition of Nordic Romanticism. It is this blend of the rigor of Minimalism and the emotional charge of Romanticism that gives his recent, abstract works their frisson. Featuring pieces from a private collection in Switzerland, this publication is an in-depth exploration of Kirkeby's works from the early 1980s to the present--with the exclusion of his work from the 70s, which was a transitional period prior to the development of his distinctive language.
