Martin Kippenberger's trickster aesthetic was aided and abetted by the owners of his famed Berlin hangout, the Paris Bar. One proprietor, Michael Würthle, provided Kippenberger with a place to make art at his family's house on the island of Syros, Greece; the other, Reinald Nohal, owned a summer retreat in Canada's Yukon Territory, which the artist visited. In those two remote locations, Kippenberger conceived his worldwide subway network, Metro-Net, and built the first two entrances, should anyone decide to do the rest of the underground excavation and construction. The Bermuda Triangle documents in detail the planning and execution of this piece by the late high-art prankster, and reproduces the varied, accomplished, sometimes hilarious and devastatingly human drawings from the 80s and 90s, mostly on hotel stationery, from Würthle's collection. Its witty design is one Kippenberger would certainly have appreciated, its two volumes accompanied by a 'guerilla marketing kit' of two posters and an “I [heart] Kippenberger” bumper sticker, all contained in a cardboard box that converts to a display stand.

Although he's best known as a painter, an inveterate experimenter whose trademark style is never to settle on a style, Sigmar Polke has been taking and printing photographs throughout his career--or in some cases taking photographs and setting the film aside until he had enough money to print them. Polke studied painting at the Dsseldorf Kunstakademie, and in the lean years after his 1968 graduation, made thousands of images on that system. This boxed limited edition includes 32 unbound, loose tritones and a 41-page softcover book on his photographs from 1969 to 1974.

This beautifully designed catalogue, published to accompany the Winter 2007 exhibition of this important German neo-Expressionist's work at Nyehaus, New York, comes housed in a stunning monochrome cobalt-blue linen-bound clamshell box with the artist's name embossed upside down and inside out on the front cover. Inside is a Coptic-stitched monograph, exquisitely printed on lush paper, which features a selection of Baselitz's work from the 1960s and 70s--including oils on canvas, pastels, gouaches, and works in graphite, ink, crayon and other media. Designed by the prominent New York firm Helicopter, the book's cover typography conveys the characteristic disorientation that Baselitz's work induces when he inverts his work's subject matter in order to free up its content. Inside, texts are printed in both English and German, while the typefaces address Baselitz's struggle to reconcile his conservative German heritage with his contemporary sensibilities as an artist. The obsessively detailed paintings of the young London artist Anj Smith (born in 1978) were shown solo for the first time this Spring at Nyehaus Gallery in New York. This limited edition companion catalogue, designed by the award-winning New York firm, Helicopter, is the first publication of Smith's career. In it, portions of the paintings are enlarged so that the reader can truly conceive of the depth and intensity of Smith's labor. The work is loaded with references to the history of Western painting, and captures all sorts of pathological aspects to the contemporary human psyche, including our obsessions with newness and the unobtainable perfection promised by haute couture. Here, the artist's fetish for detail is incorporated into the design of the book itself. From the custom-printed ribbon which wraps around the cover to the flood of color on the inside of the French-folded sheets, this volume is an equally peculiar and imaginative context for the display of Smith's work. Roberta Smith reviewed the work featured in Smith's Nyehaus show in The New York Times: "Decadence, decay and the dark side have become the province of horror films and death-metal bands, but artists like Albrecht Dürer and Hieronymus Bosch laid the foundation for this centuries before record bins overflowed with kitsch versions of "The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse." Now Anj Smith, a young British painter, is trying to reclaim part of that legacy."

Among other things, Tim Hawkinson's art celebrates the process and materiality of the work itself. This limited edition manual-esque exhibition catalogue, designed by the prominent New York firm, Helicopter, LLC, seeks to reflect that interaction with special features like a tough, transparent plastic jacket that exposes the book's spiral binding, printed plastic section dividers, a pull-out text by the prominent Los Angeles novelist and film critic Steve Erickson, two posters, numerous gatefolds and a sound chip. Dramatic and typically unique, this volume explores the geography of bookmaking just as Hawkinson's artwork explores the geography of the human form. Tim Hawkinson was born in San Francisco in 1960 and currently lives and works in Los Angeles. He has shown his work extensively for more than 25 years--recently at the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles.

Most of London painter Christopher Orr's canvases are smaller than 10 inches square. Combining the style of nineteenth-century Northern Romantic painting with isolated images culled from vintage illustrated sources such as children's books, popular scientific journals and religious magazines, the paintings are moody and evocative, their figures "sleepwalking cyphers who have strayed here from an indeterminate elsewhere where they once had a purpose," according to essayist Caoimh'n Mac Giolla Léith. This volume is a delight, with deluxe paper cut to different sizes, an enclosed poster and a special half-soft-cover, half-hardcover cloth binding. Christopher Orr was born in Helensburgh, Scotland, in 1967. He has had recent solo shows at Nyehaus, New York, Hauser &amp; Wirth, Zurich, Ibid Projects, London, and Sister, Los Angeles. His works are in the collections of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, and The Museum of Modern Art, New York.

A haunting mystery surrounds the magnificent Ice Age art that is found mainly in the caves of Western Europe. In this substantial new study, scholar Barbara Alpert approaches this art using information from psychology and discoveries in neuroscience. Techniques such as computerized tomography (CT) scans and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) have demonstrated an enormous amount about the working of the brain. By examining the oldest-known human-made images in the light of this new information, Alpert reveals many of the impulses that underlie their creation. In a detailed comparison of Ice Age images with similar examples found throughout art history, Alpert argues that the approach of these earliest artists was not unique, but forms part of a continuum linking the distant past with the present.
