Photography has become an increasingly pervasive medium of choice in contemporary art practice and is even employed at times by artists who do not necessarily consider themselves to be photographers. How did this come to be? The Last Picture Show will address the emergence of this phenomenon of artists using photography by tracing the development of conceptual trends in postwar photographic practice from its first glimmerings in the 60s in the work of artists such as Bernd &amp; Hilla Becher, Ed Ruscha and Bruce Nauman, to its rise to art-world prominence in the work of the artists of the late 70s and early 80s including Sherrie Levine, Richard Prince and Cindy Sherman. Intended as a major genealogy of the rise of a still-powerful and evolving photographic practice by artists, the checklist will include a wide array of works examining a range of issues: performativity and photographic practice; portraiture and cultural identity; the formal and social architectonics of the built environment; societal and individual interventions in the landscape; photography's relationship to sculpture and painting; the visual mediation of meaning in popular culture; and the poetic and conceptual investigation of visual non-sequiturs, disjunctions and humorous absurdities. Bringing together a newly commissioned body of scholarship with reprints of important historical texts, The Last Picture Show seeks to define the legacy that has produced a rich body of photographic practice in the art world today.

This new gorgeous and diverse collection documents the exhibition 00 at the Barbara Gladstone Gallery in New York. For this exhibition, over one hundred prominent contemporary artists were asked to submit works on paper that were made this year--in '00'. 00 investigates the act of drawing as a vital necessity that transcends the bounds of age, nationality, scale, content, process, and concept. The two axes of this new collection of poetry by noted author Douglas Messerli are the art of Los Angeles artist John Baldessari and the work of contemporary Italian poets. Dedicated to poet Amelia Rosselli, who committed suicide in 1996, Bow Down is, in part, a writing through numerous translations of contemporary Italian poetry along with Messerli’s specific responses to Baldessari’s art. Like the artist, the poet shares a method of collage which points at culture and political aspects of the world. The result is "to continue expectations that you might and would surely have what you and everyone else too knew was impossible, impossible."

After almost five decades of painting in the relative wilderness of San Diego, Richard Allen Morris has suddenly become a deserved art-world darling. Long admired by fellow West Coast artists like John Baldessari and East Coasters like David Reed, Morris has displayed a restless engagement with Abstract Expressionism over his long career, from early, large, blown-up-to-abstraction riffs on Giotto and Toulouse-Lautrec to his more recent, typing-paper-size works that show him to be a virtuoso colorist. One recurring motif has been guns, altered or colored or even "disarmed" of representation and often made comic by this distortion. Friuli Venezia Giulia is a region in the north-east of Italy, bordered by Austria and Yugoslavia, and dotted with vineyards, seaside resorts, Gothic duomos, Romanesque towns, grottoes, contemporary art, and Roman ruins. Many of these elements in the landscape have been around for hundreds of years, but one has not: contemporary art. Yet throughout this region works by Marina Abramovic, John Armleder, John Baldessari, Mike Bidlo, Louise Bourgeois, Paul McCarthy, Enzo Cucchi, Jenny Holzer, Tom Sachs, Andres Serrano, and Lawrence Weiner amongst others have occupied castles, squares, gardens, churches, landmark buildings, basements, and kitchens.
