What object best serves as an icon of the social antagonisms of 20th and 21st century capitalism? Is it the worker's raised fist? Is it the truncheon? Not even close, Andreas Siekmann might say: it's a pair of blue jeans. Since 1996, the drawings made by this Berlin-based artist have focused on the consequences of the economic (im)balance of power. With a lively and open mind, Siekmann explores how urban space has been increasingly marked by political divisions, as minorities are driven out of central areas and public spaces are increasingly supervised. In order to visualize this development, Siekmann falls back on an often-overlooked but highly resonant symbol: the blue jean. Quoting pictograms of the 1920s, Siekmann shows the pants in their initial subversive role, then goes on to present them as a sector of the international economy, at the site of production, and as a trophy of pop culture. With an air of rebellion and optimism, "Andreas Siekmann: Limited Liability Company" explores both the reactionary and utopian currents flowing through contemporary global culture.

One of the most consistently inventive artists of recent times, Los Angeles-based Ed Ruscha has been a pioneer in the use of language and imagery drawn from the popular media. From his early powerful word paintings to his influential artist's books of the sixties and seventies to his recent colorful views of generic mountains, Ruscha has investigated the spaces between highways and journeys, images and words, abstraction and representation, public imagery and the contemporary landscape. "Ed Ruscha: Gunpowder and Stains" presents some of Ruscha's most amazing illustrations from the 1970s--images that feature cryptic slogans, often reminiscent of advertising language, at turns obscured and revealed by the artist's hand. The book also features two important essays: a very personal commentary on Ruscha's impact by Thomas Demand, and an article by Diedrich Diederichsen that offers an in-depth exploration of Ruscha's combination of images and typed letters.

" Horizontality and Perpendicularity" documents the various places visited by Japanese artist On Kawara through his projects "I GOT UP" and "I WENT ", ongoing projects begun in 1968. "I GOT UP" consists of stamped postcards--stating time, venue, sender, and addressee--sent twice a day by Kawara from cities all over the world to friends and acquaintances. "I WENT" documents the distances covered daily by the artist, marked in photocopies of city maps. "Horizontality and Perpendicularity" covers both process-projects, combining a postcard and a city map for each day. French novelist and theorist Michel Butor contributes with an essay on Kawara's extremely systematic art--which recalls, in its way, Butor's experiments with the "nouveau roman" (or new novel) in the 1950s and 1960s. Beautiful and necessary, "Horizontality and Perpendicularity" is an impressive testament to Kawara's dismantling of the boundaries between art and life.
