Lucy McKenzie works in her native Glasgow, but also shows regularly in London, where she recently lured the artist Paulina Olowska from Poland for a collaborative performance called Hold the Color. The film of their performance, Oblique Composition, was later shown at the Tate Modern. In both, the artists enact what the Tate calls, "the caricatured roles of 'working women'," with McKenzie playing an artist and Olowska an architect. As McKenzie begins to draw a portrait of Olowska, she changes the scene entirely, recreating Olowska as an object and allowing the audience to watch and judge a developing work. Olowska's work has appeared at the 2003 Venice Biennale and in shows at Marc Foxx in Los Angeles and the Sculpture Center in New York; McKenzie's work has been shown at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis and in solo shows at Metro Pictures, New York, and the ICA in Boston.

This volume considers the work of Mike Kelley alongside the collaborations of Peter Fischli and David Weiss. Kelley's works are firmly anchored in an ironic, detached attitude towards his Irish Catholic upbringing; he makes use of the pictorial language of specific subcultures and the aesthetics of 'low culture,' to probe such concerns as the representation of childhood and the social construction of sexual behavior and cultural identification. Peter Fischli and David Weiss have been making art together since 1979, addressing various theoretical and philosophical explanations of the world with their subtle and humorous manipulations of common objects. The work of the American Kelley and the Swiss Fischli and Weiss resonate with each other in curious ways, most significantly in their exploration of everyday consciousness and 'low' materials. When Rosemarie Trockel emerged in the early 1980s as a principal figure in the German art scene, a member of the generation that followed Sigmar Polke, Gerhard Richter and Georg Baselitz, she was almost alone in addressing feminist issues and sexuality. Her pictures, made from machine-knitted wool and patterned with consumerist and political icons, challenged the privileged status of the male-dominated province of painting as high art, and exposed the emptiness of the icons that decorate our everyday lives.

As a young artist living in New York, Andrea Zittel started to design furniture that satisfied her needs and desires and saved space. In search for organization systems in all areas of life, she acts as a researcher, test person, inventor and fabricator efficiently rolled up into one, producing objects, dwelling units and clothing. Zittel founded A-Z Administrative Services in 1992 as a laboratory, shop, conceptual organization, apartment and office founded on the idea that a person's possessions and living conditions can influence their views and behavior, and since then has created Personal Panels, Cover, Dining Room Carpet, Perfected Pillow, Carpet Bed, Chamber Pot, Dishless Dining Table and many other works that accommodate her psychological and social needs.
