Legal History

Early one summer when Mimi Summerskill inherited $30,000 from her grandfather, she chartered a marvelous old 81' wooden racing schooner, took her 5 children, ages 10 to 22, and sailed the islands of Greece for 3 months. It was a decision that changed her life and the lives of her children forever. In Aegean Summer she tells the story of this family adventure, describing in intimate detail the excitement of this odyssey of hundreds of miles. With a Greek crew of 5 (who spoke no English), they traveled from island to island, visiting villages, finding ruins, dropping in at taverns, feasting, making friends, cycling, swimming. Aboard the Eva Maria, cramped but happy, they studied the history of Greece, its culture, mythology, politics; they read more than 100 books which stimulated endless discussions. It became, says the author, a kind of floating university. On one small island in the middle of the Aegean, Mimi fell in love with some land edging the sea and bought it. Afterwards she built a stone house there to which she and some of her family go a part of each year. Aegean Summer is above all about a woman daring to take her children on an extraordinary adventure, and about a loving family becoming even closer because of it.
