An introduction by Joan Kee and a chronology track the development of contemporary art in Korea from the 20th century to the present day. Essays by Lynn Zelevansky and Christine Starkman discuss the twelve artists featured: Kimsooja, Bahc Yiso, Do Ho Suh, Choi Jeong-Hwa, Gimhongsok, Jeon Joonho, Kim Beom, Koo Jeong-A, Minouk Lim, Jooyeon Park, Haegue Yang, and Young-hae Chang Heavy Industries. These artists work in a range of media, including sculpture, drawing, video, installation and performance, and the World Wide Web. The book also includes artists’ interviews and brief biographies.

Contemporary artist Keith Edmier has long been exploring the impact of public history on personal memory in his work. The pop icons of his youth-- such as Evel Knievel-- were seminal figures in the developing artist's psyche. Perhaps the most important figure in the artist's pantheon of inspiration is Farrah Fawcett. The object of many teen boys' affections in the 1970s, Fawcett was a particularly resonant figure for Edmier as she herself was an artist, a fact that he discovered in an issue of the teen magazine Dynamite. In August 2000, after Edmier extended a formal invitation to the actress to join him in making a work of art, Edmier and Fawcett began what would become a two-year collaboration which produced several sculptures (including two large-scale nude sculptures of each other) and numerous photographs and drawings. The results of this extraordinary project are chronicled in this volume. The essay by Lynn Zelevansky, curator of contemporary and modern art at Los Angeles County Museum of Art where the exhibition of the work debuted, explores other potent artist/muse pairings and how the traditional hierarchy of this kind of undertaking has been eroded by Fawcett's full participation in the project. She also considers how their project engages pop culture, writing: "...[Fawcett] and Edmier have reminded us about the world of images we inhabit, where it can be difficult to tell the real from the imaginary. They have held a magnifying glass to the relationship between fantasy and reality, celebrity and fan, allowing us to understand something about the way that mass culture impacts lives and shapes memory."

The artwork of Robert Therrien makes reference to commonplace, even cliched motifs - a snowman, a cloud, a Dutch door, a bird in flight, a stack of plates. In the perfection of their proportions and the simplicity of their forms these works - sculptures, reliefs, and two-dimensional pieces - partake of a cool objectivity. Their narrative associations, however, give them the intimacy of personal history. They possess a wholesome familiarity, yet their often huge size gives them an uncanny; disquieting quality. In this volume, which accompanies the exhibition Robert Therrien and examines the artist's work of the past decade, curator Lynn Zelevansky explores the transformation of forms that has been the hallmark of Therrien's artistic process and situates his work within contemporary art practice. Essayist Thomas Frick discusses the work vis-a-vis the formalist tradition in art and examines the paradoxical nature of its abstract and figurative aspects. In the volume's third and final essay, art historian Norman Bryson investigates the visceral effect of Therrien's sculpture on the viewer, relating its effects to the corporeal invasions and restitutions found in animated cartoons.

The centerpiece of the book is the fascinating--and hitherto largely untold--history of contemporary art at LACMA, written by Lynn Zelevansky, Curator of Contemporary Art. Zelevansky's 26,000-word essay is profusely illustrated with signature works from the collection and numerous historical and documentary photographs. Anthony Hernandez provided a portfolio of elegant abstractions. Sharon Lockhart photographed the process of archaeological excavation from the underlying tar pits. The Center for Land Use Interpretation journeyed to the far-flung quarries and mines that were the sources of the construction materials. And Uta Barth discovered spaces of beauty and mystery within the unfinished building. Brazilian artist Cildo Meireles, born in 1948, has made some of the most politically telling and aesthetically seductive works in recent art. An important theme in the Brazilian postwar avant-garde, from which Meireles emerged at the end of the 1960s, was the relationship between the sensual and the cerebral, the body and the mind. Meireles, now acknowledged as a key instigator of international Conceptual art, has remained true to these concerns--and to a political and ethical viewpoint formed outside the cultures of plenty. At the same time, he has become a global artist, making work that deals with issues and experiences that affect us all--whatever our country of origin. Under the repressive military regime of the late 1960s and early 1970s, which controlled the Brazilian media, Meireles found different ways of reaching the public--stamping bank notes with seditious slogans and returning them into circulation, or stenciling Coke bottles with slogans before sending them back to the bottling plant. Other works play with the sense of space or scale, varying in size from that of a finger ring to an installation covering almost 750 square feet. His installations are always designed to heighten the awareness of his audience, sometimes by inducing fear, as in "Volatile" (1980/94), which includes the presence of a naked candle and the smell of natural gas. "Babel" (2001) is a contemporary take on the myth of the tower that confounded the world's languages.
