Many students and would-be students of A Course in Miracles have found the Course's Christian context and emphasis on Jesus problematic, regardless of their own religious background. These problems have interfered with many students' study and understanding of the Course. In response to these difficulties, Forgiveness and Jesus addresses the misunderstandings of traditional Christianity, separating these out from the teachings of the Course, and emphasizes the importance of correcting these errors in the context of the two-thousand-year-old tradition. Forgiveness and Jesus first discusses in depth the principles of A Course in Miracles, specifically focusing on the dynamics of the ego and the meaning of forgiveness. The book next presents the teachings of Christianity in the light of the principles of the Course, highlighting the similarities and differences. Throughout the book, special attention is given to the application of the Course's principles to important areas in our lives such as injustice, anger, sickness, sexuality, and money. The person of Jesus is also discussed in depth. The Appendix includes an index of names, a subject index, an index of examples, and a scriptural index.

'The essential characteristic of A Course in Miracles that lies at the core of our differences is that it is a non-dualistic spirituality. Christianity, as Judaism before it, is a dualistic thought system in which God and the world, spirit and matter, co-exist as separate states, both of which are real. Reality is thus seen to be a dimension of opposites as with good and evil in marked distinction from the Course's understanding of reality as being only perfect unity in which there are no opposites.' (Adapted from "Summary and Conclusions") Many students of 'A Course in Miracles' have been tempted to call it the 'Third Testament,' thereby expressing their belief that it represents the same basic theology of the Bible, although in a more "purified," i.e., less ego-dominated, or more spiritually evolved form. Kenneth Wapnick and Rev. W. Norris Clarke, S.J., priest, philosopher, theologian, and Professor Emeritus from Fordham University, engage in this dialogue in order to identify the radical differences, as well as the similarities, between the thought systems of A Course in Miracles and biblical Christianity. Fr. Clarke, a Catholic priest, frames his remarks so as to represent the main theological doctrines of most Protestant churches as well. This book consists of a substantial expansion of the discussion in The Obstacles to Peace, first published in 1987. In revising his earlier work, Kenneth has added an extensive introduction and epilogue, and tripled the discussion, including many more references to other passages in the Course. In addition, the old question-and-answer format has been changed to enhance the flow of the material. "The Obstacles to Peace" sections present the important themes in "A Course in Miracles," stated in powerful and beautiful language as well. These range from the metaphysical theme of how God did not create the world and the body—and indeed knows absolutely nothing about them—to the specific teachings on the projection of guilt, and its undoing through the practice of forgiveness in our special relationships. There are also some incisive passages where Jesus speaks of himself and the projections that have been put upon him, emphasizing the important role the ego has given him in its thought system. This distortion is corrected by Jesus making clear the nature of the role he has in his thought system, undoing the ego through helping us to change our minds about what we think and perceive.
