<p>Annual 2004 celebrates the relaunch of Los Angeles Forum's publication series after a five-year hiatus. After realizing the community had lost its main publication to discuss and critically debate the rapidly evolving issues facing contemporary architecture and urbanism, Annual was reinstated. In its return, Los Angeles once again connects to its rich history in critical thinking first established with the area academics and practicing professionals with all benefit from this periodical's rebirth.</p>

Dissident Futures presents art that investigates possible alternative futures, particularly those that question or overturn conventional notions of innovation, such as existing power, economic and technological structures. The artists and designers in Dissident Futures have the intellectual capacity and aesthetic innovation to envision a future that expands beyond our expectations. The concept is loosely structured intro three thematic strands--the utopian, the speculative and the pragmatic--with each strand providing a platform for furthering our understanding of how artists are addressing the unknown. <p>Blue Monday features three moments in modern culture that offer glimpses into our increasingly perverse relationship to architecture, cities, and objects through a lively mix of philosophy, photography, architectural drawings and models, as well as new media. The first section, Ether, explores a Los Angeles telecom hotel, One Wilshire, a 39 story building of utter banality and complete mystery. The second, the Stimulus Progression, looks at the strange story of the Muzak Corporation and the invention of a culture of horizontality. The third, Quartzsite, Arizona, visits a desert town of some 3,000 people in the summer that swells to over a million residents every year as a horde of modern nomads descends upon it in their Recreational Vehicles. This is the first book by the Architecture Urban Design Collaborative, AUDC founded by Robert Sumrell and Kazys Varnelis of Columbia University.</p>
