Over 40 years ago, Andy Warhol promoted the concept that artists are celebrities, just as worthy of portrayal as other cultural icons. Likeness: Portraits of Artists by Other Artists begins where Warhol left off. Presenting visually striking and conceptually diverse works in a range of mediums, Likeness is the first exhibition and catalogue to propose a recent history of artists' representations of other artists--of friends, peers, and idols. While any portrait is both a document and a personal record of the relationship between the artist and his or her subject, blurring distinctions between public and private, portraits of artists further enrich the situation; they commemorate and concretize the intimate social dramas of the art world and the economies of exchange. Wolfgang Tillmans (b. 1968) is one of the most significant European artists at work today. His informal and apparently spontaneous photographs of gay pride activists, ecowarriors, and clubbers brought him attention at an early age and eventually won him acclaim as a chronicler of his generation. Tillmans's work spans the genres of landscape, cityscape, portraiture, and still life. Since the early 1990s, his works have epitomized a new kind of subjectivity in photography, pairing intimacy and playfulness with social critique. Through his seamless integration of genres, subjects, techniques, and exhibition strategies, he has expanded conventional ways of approaching the medium and his practice continues to address the fundamental question of what it means to create pictures in an increasingly image-saturated world.Published on the occasion of Tillmans' 2018 exhibition at David Zwirner in Hong Kong, this bilingual catalog juxtaposes pictures of intimacy and friendship with views and angles of the world at large. An aerial view of the Sahara desert displays almost infinite detail while being monochromatic and near-abstract in appearance. For AutoWork, two teams of curators in the United States and Germany invited internationally renowned artists to work with the BMW group's corporate identity--in the widest sense of the term: its employees, products, customers, work processes and image, using both photography and film. The artists were granted absolute artistic freedom and complete autonomy. Street photography has a long and varied history, encompassing such artists as Walker Evans from the 1930s, Robert Frank from the 1950s, and Garry Winogrand from the 1970s, each of whom, along with other practitioners, siezed the medium as their own and extended it, creating something new. Open City brings together the work of 19 artists to examine the history of street photography over the course of the last half-century. It takes as its starting point photographers such as Lee Friedlander and William Klein, who were instrumental in the development of a radical new approach to documentary photography, aided by the increasing portablility of camera equipment. For these and subsequent artists, the street has continued to hold an inherent fascination as a theater of human activity. Open City reflects the diversity of the work stimulated by this revolution: from Terry Donovan's advertising and fashion photography, to Susan Meiselas's photographs of war-torn Nicaragua and Raghubir Singh's vibrant and colorful images of his native India. Color, now considered a key tool for photographers, has only in recent years been legitimized, in part thanks to the work of American photographer William Eggleston during the late 1970s. Open City also includes the work of a newer generation of photographers, including the Turner Prize-winning Wolfgang Tillmans, and examines the the way in which contemporary practice continues to react to and build upon the tradition of street photography.
