A religious, well-educated Victorian, Curwen takes us into the heart of the colonial society he encountered. He reveals the pervasive sectarianism, the tawdry political world of St John's, the rudimentary conditions aboard the fishing schooners, and the poverty of the Labrador "livyers," the permanent white settlers who had intermarried with the Inuit. He provides fresh details of the lives of the Moravian Brethren, the first missionaries to the Native population, and comments on the wildlife, the natural environment, and the general disposition of the countryside. Curwen's candid remarks about Grenfell reveal facets of the young missionary and social reformer not found elsewhere. The introduction and annotations by Ronald Rompkey, Grenfell's biographer, establish the historical, political, and social contexts of the journal. Dr. Harry Paddon's memoir is an extensive account of life in Labrador prior to Confederation. As the Grenfell Mission's principal physician for over twenty-five years, Dr. Paddon travelled extensively throughout Labrador by both dog team and boat. Through his journals he fashions a portrait of Labrador society in accord with the traditional rhythms of trapping and fishing, as it was before the onset of industrial development. He also chronicles the demands of northern medicine in response to pervasive threats such as tuberculosis and deficiency diseases, including a moving description of the Spanish Flu epidemic of 1918-19.

Expeditions of Honour presents the entirety of Salusbury's diary, supplemented with a biographical introduction, historical notes on events and major figures, and the letters he sent to his wife. Selected in 1749 to serve on the first Halifax council and to supervise the granting and allocation of land, he eventually lost the confidence of Governor Edward Cornwallis and was gradually excluded from his inner circle. It begins with an introduction by Ronald Rompkey to situate the Shepherds in the post-Confederation cultural milieu, followed by a general biographical and historical essay by Peter Gard, who wrote the catalogue for the AGNL exhibition “Helen Parsons Shepherd and Reginald Shepherd: Four Decades” in 1989. Next, jou alist and playwright Joan Sullivan explores through interviews with former students the environment created at the Newfoundland Academy of Art at 51 Cochrane Street. Lisa Moore, a fiction writer who also possesses a degree in visual art from NSCAD, follows with an investigation of the portrait as an art form and Helen Parsons Shepherd’s career as a portraitist. The volume concludes with an essay on early printmaking in Newfoundland and Reginald Shepherd’s work in this medium by Anne Pratt, who has had considerable experience as an art jou alist and critic. These essays constitute approximately half the volume, the remainder consisting of illustrations from the work of both artists.
