Conroe (Images of America)

Conroe, largely a product of intersecting railroads and timber, was founded in 1881 and, by 1889, was the county seat of Montgomery County, Texas. Named for timber magnet and former Union officer Isaac Conroe, with its resilient spirit, Conroe eventually became one of the fastest-growing cities in the United States. At one point during the oil boom in the 1930s, Conroe was home to more millionaires per capita than any other town in the United States. Innovative individuals from all walks of life have graced the community, lending fodder to the community goal of becoming the cultural capital of Texas. One of those individuals, oil magnet George Strake, laid the foundation for Conroe's slogan, "The Miracle City." The community has survived and overcome many obstacles in its 150-year history, including several fires and floods, and continues to live up to that motto to this day.

The Cradle of Texas Road encircles the Lone Star landscapes that nurtured so much of the state's early history, from European settlement through the Texas Republic. The first attempt at Texan liberation ended in the bloodiest battle in Texas history, after the insurgents divided their forces along racial lines at Medina in 1813. It required Sam Houston's more collaborative approach at the Battle of San Jacinto in 1836 to finally realize the dream of Texas independence. Navasota is named for the nearby Navasota River. The naming of the river is linked, most plausibly, to an encounter on its banks in the 1540s between Indians and a Spanish expedition led initially by the then-deceased Hernando de Soto. Indians believed that spirits of the dead were associated with rivers. Accordingly, though he was interred earlier in the Mississippi River, the Indians saw de Soto's spirit reborn in their river, hence the legendary term "Nativity de Soto," shortened to Navasota. As this book shows, the history of Navasota has revolved around the theme of birth. It stands in the Cradle of Texas, associated endemically with the founding of Spanish Texas and later with the birth of the Republic of Texas. At the crossroads of Texas, Navasotians have pioneered new industries while moderating equilibrium between a genteel society bent on expanding the mind and a ruffian element tamed only at the hands of an icon in American folklore.

Sam Houston's Quest: The Cherokee and African-American Virtue Agenda is an historical analysis fertile with relationship to current issues of cultural polarization. Against the backdrop of Sam Houston's legacy, it addresses problems of social mix between the larger US scene and the Cherokees and African-Americans. Overlapping the interactive social milieu is a treatment of issues endemic to political unity within and between all the racial and cultural segments. Pertaining to the Cherokees, addressed are the varied opinions and assessments of the threat of Civil War overshadowing the era of the forced migrations called The Trail of Tears. Within the context of shifting locations from Tennessee and Georgia to Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas from the late eighteenth century to current times, the evolution of social structure and politics of the Cherokee receives analysis as relates to factors both within and exterior to their own domain. As with the Cherokee, explored is the larger African-American psyche as it engages a socio-political environment in constant flux from the 17th century to the present era. Highlights include the impact of Sam Houston's legacy upon his fabulous slave and compadre, Joshua Houston, and the latter's famous son, Samuel Walker Houston. Along the way, explored are the workings of several religious-based African American colleges started in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Central to these explorations are the interrelated concepts of intelligence capped by Biblically-based virtue as keys to education and assimilation to US Culture. The book ends with a call to honor the dual legacies of Sam Houston and Martin Luther King Jr. as models around which to forge a common and integrated culture true to the essence of both pluralism and virtue-based traditionalism.
