The basic claim of this book is that for two thousand years and more the Western tradition has relied on two very dubious assumptions about human communication. One of these is that each national language is a unique code that specifies determinate forms, meanings and combinations of these utilized in everyday discourse. The other is that linguistic communication consists in the utilization of such codes to transfer messages from the mind of one individual to the mind of another.
