The calculus of variations is a beautiful subject with a rich history and with origins in the minimization problems of calculus. Although it is now at the core of many modern mathematical fields, it does not have a well-defined place in most undergraduate mathematics curricula. This volume should nevertheless give the undergraduate reader a sense of its great character and importance. Interesting functionals, such as area or energy, often give rise to problems for which the most natural solution occurs by differentiating a one-parameter family of variations of some function.The critical points of the functional are related to the solutions of the associated Euler-Lagrange equation. These differential equations are at the heart of the calculus of variations and its applications to other subjects. Some of the topics addressed in this book are Morse theory, wave mechanics, minimal surfaces, soap bubbles, and modeling traffic flow. All are readily accessible to advanced undergraduates. This book is derived from a workshop sponsored by Rice University. It is suitable for advanced undergraduates, graduate students and research mathematicians interested in the calculus of variations and its applications to other subjects.

Tokyo Compression captures a different aspect of an Asian metropolis  the steamy subterranean hell of the citys underground system. Michael Wolf is best known for his large format photographs of dense Asian architecture. The fascination for city life seems to also come through in his latest work ASOUE (or a series of unfortunate events). Using Google's Street view technology, Wolf has collected, as the title of the publication states a series of unfortunate events. This ranges from tripped elderly women, to junkies sleeping of their highs to people dropping their groceries. This publication shows how technology captures the true events of daily life. Wolf participated in the World Press Photo competition.

In front of typical Chinese urban backdrops young Chinese women and men present oil paintings by American and European artists from different epochs: Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Warhol, Ruscha, Hockney, Magritte, Hopper, Richter, Da Vinci. All pictures of a multi-million dollar industry. A production of copies of popular artworks, which are sold at giveaway prices into the whole world. Van Gogh: $75.00, Warhol: $45.00, Ruscha: $50.00. The handpainted copies mainly come from China, the buyers can almost entirely be found in the United States and Europe, the countries of origin of the unaffordable originals. Wolf photographed the Chinese copy-artists and has placed manifold relations between the pictured subject, the urban environment and the portrayed artists. Essay by Boris von Brauchitsch.

His portraits of people who are on their way in the Tokyo subway, constrained between glass, steel and fellow travelers, have won many awards and were shown in exhibitions around the globe. The first edition of this book was sold out after a few weeks. And the topic kept haunting Michael Wolf as well. He returned to Tokyo in order to immerse in the subsurface insanity once again and this time even deeper.
