Jo Röttger accompanied Robert Wilson  the great man of theatre  on a tumultuous global journey. From his Watermill Center, Long Island, his apartment in New York, alongside preparations and rehearsals from different productions in Warsaw, Paris, Berlin and Taiwan, during a visit to Athens, encounters with Dervish dancers in Istanbul, and during the opening of the VOOM exhibition in New York. Throughout the journey Röttger kept his distance from Wilson  a prerequisite of the project  wherein neither the photographer nor his subject acknowledged one another. Single-page, full-colour and black and white photographs are presented throughout the publication and accompanied by a short introduction and explanatory texts.

With an introduction by Ernest Chui and essay by Natasha Egan. This book formed the first part of Wolf's now out-of-print INSIDE/OUTSIDE book.

Michael Wolf is renowned for super-sized photographs of Chicago, and his home for the last fifteen years  Hong Kong. Tokyo Compression captures a different aspect of an Asian metropolis  the steamy subterranean hell of the citys underground system. Wolf has recorded the human response to one of the most stressful and unreal social environments imaginable. Caught in intimate detail, the sweating faces and contorted postures of Tokyos solemn commuters become a study of distress, resilience, commercial pressure and urban isolation. Yet the series ends happily  a businessman, set free from the trains, plays with a cat in an airy park before heading home, work done.

Michael Wolf - Tokyo Compression

Michael Wolf is best known for his large format photographs of dense Asian architecture. The fascination for city life seems to also come through in his latest work ASOUE (or a series of unfortunate events). Using Google's Street view technology, Wolf has collected, as the title of the publication states a series of unfortunate events. This ranges from tripped elderly women, to junkies sleeping of their highs to people dropping their groceries. This publication shows how technology captures the true events of daily life. Wolf participated in the World Press Photo competition.

A Series of Unfortunate Events

In front of typical Chinese urban backdrops young Chinese women and men present oil paintings by American and European artists from different epochs: Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Warhol, Ruscha, Hockney, Magritte, Hopper, Richter, Da Vinci. All pictures of a multi-million dollar industry. A production of copies of popular artworks, which are sold at giveaway prices into the whole world. Van Gogh: $75.00, Warhol: $45.00, Ruscha: $50.00. The handpainted copies mainly come from China, the buyers can almost entirely be found in the United States and Europe, the countries of origin of the unaffordable originals. Wolf photographed the Chinese copy-artists and has placed manifold relations between the pictured subject, the urban environment and the portrayed artists. Essay by Boris von Brauchitsch.

Michael Wolf: Real Fake Art

With ""Tokyo Compression"" Michael Wolf struck a nerve. His portraits of people who are on their way in the Tokyo subway, constrained between glass, steel and fellow travelers, have won many awards and were shown in exhibitions around the globe. The first edition of this book was sold out after a few weeks. And the topic kept haunting Michael Wolf as well. He returned to Tokyo in order to immerse in the subsurface insanity once again and this time even deeper. Now with ""Tokyo Compression Revisited"" the second, completely revised edition is published, with many so far unreleased images and an entirely new ""hidden track"" at the end of the book.
