<p>Stephen Shore (b. 1947) is a true artistic innovator whose work has opened up new frontiers for contemporary photography. His photographs of American scenes unveil the exceptional beauty to be found in the everyday. As one of the first art photographers to work in color, Shore pioneered such contemporary genres as the diaristic snapshot (later taken up by Nan Goldin and Wolfgang Tillmans) and the monumentalized landscape (as later practiced by Becher-school photographers Thomas Struth and Andreas Gursky). This monograph offers the first complete examination of Shore's long and storied career, from his residency at Warhol's Factory to his experiments in conceptual photography; from his landmark series AMERICAN SURFACES to his continued exploration of emerging techniques. This exhibition catalogue brings together a comprehensive selection of American photographer James Welling's images from the past 25 years, offering the opportunity for an in-depth study of the complex and mutable priorities upon which this work builds its strength. The different series of works complement and contrast one another as a network of associations, rather than a linear chronology. For example, we see the on-going tension between the representational power of photography and its pictorial purity (or abstraction) when moving from the images of railroads to his pictures of crumpled fabric and foil imaginary landscapes. And most recently, the "Light Sources" pictures embrace a wide range of associations from the world observed or natural, the sun shining through a thicket of trees, to the world engineered or mediated, a mosaic of ceiling lights. Working in a range of media, including video, photography and sound installation he has developed a very personal vision of a posthistorical world with a simplicity that transcends borders and cultures. His subtle weaving of the basic elements of light and darkness, achrome and colour, and sound and silence create a transformative experience that mesmerizes the viewer. Composed of two volumes bound into a single book, this original publication documents a rare North American exhibition and provides an introduction to the artist's career. The second section of the book is devoted to the project 'Inversion (Creating Space Where There Appears to Be None)' jointly conceived by Anri Sala with Edi Rama.
