This compelling book looks at the work of three influential women artists and at the import of feminism in their practices. Painters Lee Lozano (1930–1999), Sylvia Plimack Mangold (b. 1938), and Joan Semmel (b. 1932) are each intensely private and––to varying degrees––chose or have chosen to disappear into their studios to work. Seemingly unconcerned about the prevailing styles or movements, these three women nevertheless each contributed to transformations in the art world. 
Solitaire examines in depth the three artists’ work, sets the historical and social context, and analyzes the private endeavor of the artist alongside the critical reception of their art. The authors call attention to other artists who, like these three, have chosen private or idiosyncratic paths that too often exclude them from art historical narratives.

Emily Dickinson's poems stand alone in the English language in their severe yet wild shapeliness and unhindered dexterity of thought. In Earths Grow Thick, the American artist Roni Horn put those poems--or lines from them--to new uses, incorporating her words in a series of austere, stick-like sculptures. Horn makes similar use of William Blake, but her sympathy with the work of Dickinson is clear, and results in a beautiful form or word sculpture. This handsome catalogue is published in conjunction with the first exhibition to present the four bodies of Horn's work comprising the Dickinson sculptures. The illustrations are complemented by texts ranging from Judith Fox's interview with Horn to bell hooks' intimate recollections of her childhood introduction to Dickinson's work.

This publication borrows critic Harold Rosenberg's memorable phase “apocalyptic wallpaper” to describe the work of contemporary artists who have created wallpaper of their own design or appropriated the patterns of others, finding entirely new possibilities within this medium. Andy Warhol's celebrated Jersey Cow wallpaper, for example, humorously subverts the landscape motifs conventional wallpapers often use to bring nature indoors. Featured artists include Warhol, Robert Gober, Abigail Lane and Virgil Marti.

Apocalyptic Wallpaper

Staging Surrealism assesses what is perhaps the twentieth century's most influential movement by tracing its legacy in contemporary art. Rene Magritte, Salvador Dali, Max Ernst and Man Ray (as well as Surrealist predecessors or comrades such Eugene Atget and Andre Kertesz) are presented alongside contemporary artists in a section titled Correspondences: A Dream Album that features dream journals by such filmmakers and artists as Isaac Julien, Tom Kalin and Kara Walker.
