Thomas Sch++tte is a catalog of works by this contemporary German artist. Sch++tte studied under Gerhard Richter, Benjamin Buchloh, and Bernd and Hilla Becher at the D++sseldorf Academy in the 1970s. He comes from that strong conceptual background, but as his career matured the emotional content of his work evolved and became much more potent. Sch++tte's work is incredibly eclectic: ceramic figures, architectural models, drawings, outdoor sculptures, photographs, and installations. A recent work, Big Spirits (1996), is a collection of larger-than-life-size aluminum figures that seem to be morphing before one's eyes. They are at once ghost, human, and machine. Also riveting is The Innocents (1994), a series of photographs of the heads of handmade figurines, and United Enemies, A Play in Ten Scenes (1993)--offset lithographs, also of figurines wrapped in Sch++tte's clothes. His watercolors are beautiful, ranging from drawings of fruit to portraits of women. Whatever the project, Sch++tte is tapped in to a particular humanity.Included in the book are essays by Julian Heynen and Angela Vettese, an interview with James Lingwood, and an essay by Roman philosopher Seneca, chosen by the artist. It includes Horn’s best-known series, such as You Are the Weather, To Place, a.k.a., Some Thames and Cloud and Clown. Throughout these sequences, Horn’s abiding motifs recur: water, weather, her adoptive home of Iceland, and more formal qualities such as repetition and permutation. The book shows how Horn’s major works can be experienced in ever-new constellations, arrangements and contrasts within the exhibition context. Until recently, Gregor Schneider has focused primarily on Dead House ur, the ongoing 20-year transformation of his parents' former home in Rheydt, Germany, which was reconstructed in the German Pavilion at the 2001 Venice Biennale when Schneider was awarded the Golden Lion for Sculpture. On a smaller scale, on October 2, 2004, Die Familie Schneider took up residence in neighboring identical houses on a very ordinary street in London's East End. This book is Schneider's extension of that work, a document and exploration of his obsession with repression, reproduction and particularly, in this case, repetition in images and text. Schneider is internationally renowned for his unnerving presentation of normality, and his medium is the room--kitchen, living room, bedroom, bathroom--and the cellar. Under his hand, the domestic environment becomes the site of an unrelenting existential confrontation.

The distinctive geography, climate and culture of Iceland has engaged Roni Horn for over 30 years. Her intimate relationship with the island has led to a multidisciplinary series of works, including books, drawings, sculpture, texts and photographs. Located in a converted library building on a promontory overlooking the ocean in Stykkishólmur on Iceland's west coast, Vatnasafn/Library of Water incorporates Horn's abiding interest in water and weather, reflection and illumination, and the relation of these phenomena to the fluidity of human identity. The installation houses 24 glass columns containing local glacier water that reflect outside weather conditions onto a rubber floor embedded with weather-related adjectives. It also functions as a community space, a writers' studio and an oral archive of local weather reports. An introduction by co-director of the London-based nonprofit Artangel, James Lingwood, surveys Horn's substantial body of Iceland-related work alongside essays by critics Briony Fer and Adrian Searle, a selection of weather reports and writings by Horn, inspired by her experience of the enigmatic island.
