This book documents Janet Cardiff's 1999 audio project, The Missing voice (Case Study B), and includes the full audio CD as well as images from this exploration of London's inner city. Part urban guide, part fiction, part film noir, her audio walk entwines the listener in a narrative that shifts through time and space. Intimate, even conspirational, Cardiff has created a psychologically absorbing experience for an audience of one at a time. You find yourself transported back in time. What was that sound? Who is speaking to you? Where does reality end, and what's imagined begin? Also included is an extended essay analyzing the artist's career to date. Born in 1957, in Brussels, Canada, Cardiff works and lives in Alberta and has shown internationally in, among others, London, New York, Berlin, and Vienna. Her work has been included in significant group exhibitions, notably Skulptur Projekte Munster, 1997; Present Tense: Nine Artists in the Nineties, at San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the 1999 Carnegie International; and the Museum as Muse at New York's Museum of Modern Art.

People see strange things. Lights in the sky, mysterious phenomena, visions and visitations--things they can't explain but know they saw. Susan Hiller has been collecting stories of these sightings for years. Some of them are prosaic and descriptive. Others are visionary and marvelous. All of them are true. Hundreds of eyewitness accounts were brought together through years of research for "Witness", Susan Hiller's ambitious installation, which asks us to explore the area where rational explanations no longer seem to hold. This accompanying publication, presented as the artist's "Witness" research file, contains a large selection of the original witness statements, as well as a selection of Hiller's personal notes, sketches, and drawings on the work as it developed. To seduce the reader into experiencing the visions of others, the book comes with a CD containing 50 witness statements.

In Madison Square Park in New York, and subsequently in Soho Square, the heart of London's media world, video artist Tony Oursler created a spectral audio-visual experience for an image-saturated society. Conceived as a kind of psycho-landscape, "The Influence Machine" delves deep into the history of media, rousing long-forgotten spirits and setting them to roam about both squares at night. The ghosts of the Fox Sisters, who made telegraphic contact with the spirit world in the mid-19th century, haunted alongside the ghost of television pioneer John Logie Baird. This book brings together Tony Oursler's most elaborate deep media projects in an illustrated time line, the "Timestream", and accompanying texts elaborate on the phantasmagorias of the late 18th century, its contemporary equivalents, and the influence of spiritualism within the general development of media. In 1984, the English National Union of Mineworkers went on strike. On June 18 of that year, one of the most violent confrontations during the bitter, year-long dispute culminated in a mounted police charge through the village of Orgreave, South Yorkshire. On June 17, 2001, artist Jeremy Deller staged a partial reenactment of that event, collaborating with members of historical reenactment societies from all over Britain and with local people from mining communities in South Yorkshire.
