In addition to reciting standard royalty rate ranges for the years, Battersby and Grimes, both with a Connecticut law firm, report court decisions that have actually referred to royalty rates in the merchandising area during the previous year, refer to public documents filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, and compile royalty rates typically charged by franchisers as part of their franchise agreements. At first glance, they say, the results may appear the same as in previous years, but in fact the changes are about twice as much as between previous years, which they attribute to a weak economy and a corresponding softening of royalty rates.
