Lee Jungjin (1961- ) is a photographer who, through creative musings on landscapes and things in general, shows a wholly distinctive approach for the expression of the essential abstractness and surrealism in her subjects. In the 1980s, under the influence of Robert Frank in New York, she created a photographic world of her own which served as an entrée to documentary work in Korea. Her innovative photographic work with "Korean Paper Prints" resulted from her ongoing pursuit of and experimentation with various materials. More than reproductions of reality or reconstructions of the momentary beauty of lifeless landscapes, deserts, seas or other objects, the images connect with the artists inner metaphor, coming as a whisper of an existence beyond time and place. This book consists of 75 selections from Lees portfolio ranging from the early 80s up to recent times, revealing her evolving world of photography.Yun Jae-rim (1959- ), a poet and graduate of the Department of Korean Literature at Dongguk University in Seoul. In 1987 the magazine Munyejoong-ang brought her acclaim with its award of the New Writer Literary Prize. Currently, he also holds a professorship in the Creative Advertising Department at Seoul Arts College.

Photographer Kim Ki-chan published this photo book which represents “Alley Scenery” after looking into every alleyway and street corner in Seoul. At the end of the 1960s, with a secondhand camera, Kim started taking photos of peddlers he met on his daily commute. Later, he went to the alleys of Jungrim-dong in Seoul, after following the peddlers to their home district. Since then, the theme became the photographer’s subject for his whole artistic life. Kim was not a photographer with a menacing attitude or who hid, making an uncomfortable atmosphere while he took his photos. Instead, he got along with his models openly. His reminiscent affection for the old alleys and longing for their return are made visible in his photos. However, he could not continue with his work because the alleys began disappearing one by one with redevelopment of parts of the old city in the late 1980s. Side streets and corners were filled with poverty but affectionate connections, and in them are traces of our old days that we cannot easily forget. The photos of these long-lost places bring back the memories leaving us with bittersweet nostalgia. Kim Ki Chan (1938-2005) graduated from Seorabul Art College, majoring in Theater and Cinema. He was the chief of video production department for the Korea Broadcasting System and served as a professor at the Media Research Center of the Korea Broadcasting System. Mr. Kim presented his solo exhibition, “The Alley Scenery,” several times over the years, and also participated in group exhibitions such as “Our Near Past.” The photographer published “The Lost Landscape”(2004), “The Warm Alley with a Dog”(2000), “The Alley Scenery”(1998), and others. Jung Jin-guk, the writer, studied formative arts and aesthetics in Seoul and Paris. Some of his works are “The Book in a Traveling Bag,”and “A Visit to the Book Town in Europe.” Among his translated works is “The History of Photography.”

Hanok walls may as well be regarded as beautiful abstract paintings given their unique surface divisions which do not conform to established architectural rules. The plastered white walls are bilaterally divided by darker colors of wooden columns and pillars, and small doors and windows are placed within. Depending on the circumstances, details of the styles and shapes of proportional divisions of hanok walls are predominantly decided upon and determined by the individual master builders, which mostly results in neat and tidy walls. For example, walls with wooden lines of pillars and columns may represent the time-honored pride of a white-clad race of Korean people. Contrary to the geometrical coldness of Western abstract paintings, these hanok walls are abstract paintings of realism with a touch of humanity. For modern Western painters such as Piet Mondrian, abstract paintings are an artificial abstraction of a careful calculation and geometry, whereas the abstract designs of hanok walls are none other than life's traces which have been gradually formed over time from the Korean practice of building houses. Cha Jang-sup, born in Pohang, Gyeongsangbuk-do in 1958, studied history at Kyungpook National University and received B. A., M. A. and Ph. D. He is currently a Professor of History at Kangwon National University at Samcheok, teaching courses on Korean history and the history of Korean arts. He has also served in various academic and university positions, including president of The Society for the Study of Joseon History, director of Research Institute for Gangwon Traditional Culture, director of University Library, and head of University Planning and Development.

Since old times, Koreans have grown up hearing about tigers, and they enjoyed talking about tigers. The sheer number of tigers in Korea, combined with the hearty Korean imagination, has rendered the tiger the single folk theme greater in Korea than in any other country, above all China and Japan in Northeast Asia, in terms of quantity. This book includes all aspects of real and imaginary tigers including extraordinary tiger paintings, beliefs and customs related to tigers, the ecology of tigers, Korean medical therapy and tigers, the literature on tigers, and proverbs related to tigers. Thus, this book can be called a “Tiger Almanac,” which contains a plethora of information on tigers. Twelve years after its publication in 1986, the “Year of the Tiger,” this book saw another “Year of the Tiger” in 1998. Kim Ho-geun (1943- ) majored in Korean literature at Yonsei University, and currently operates a book-editing company. Yoon Yul-soo (1947- ) lectures on Buddhist art at Dongguk University, and has published many books related to the subject.
