<p>Photographer Kim Ki-chan published this photo book which represents “Alley Scenery” after looking into every alleyway and street corner in Seoul. At the end of the 1960s, with a secondhand camera, Kim started taking photos of peddlers he met on his daily commute. Later, he went to the alleys of Jungrim-dong in Seoul, after following the peddlers to their home district. Since then, the theme became the photographer’s subject for his whole artistic life. Kim was not a photographer with a menacing attitude or who hid, making an uncomfortable atmosphere while he took his photos. Instead, he got along with his models openly. His reminiscent affection for the old alleys and longing for their return are made visible in his photos. However, he could not continue with his work because the alleys began disappearing one by one with redevelopment of parts of the old city in the late 1980s. Side streets and corners were filled with poverty but affectionate connections, and in them are traces of our old days that we cannot easily forget. The photos of these long-lost places bring back the memories leaving us with bittersweet nostalgia. Kim Ki Chan (1938-2005) graduated from Seorabul Art College, majoring in Theater and Cinema. He was the chief of video production department for the Korea Broadcasting System and served as a professor at the Media Research Center of the Korea Broadcasting System. Mr. Kim presented his solo exhibition, “The Alley Scenery,” several times over the years, and also participated in group exhibitions such as “Our Near Past.” The photographer published “The Lost Landscape”(2004), “The Warm Alley with a Dog”(2000), “The Alley Scenery”(1998), and others. Jung Jin-guk, the writer, studied formative arts and aesthetics in Seoul and Paris. Some of his works are “The Book in a Traveling Bag,”and “A Visit to the Book Town in Europe.” Among his translated works is “The History of Photography.”</p>
