In the 1960s women journlists were just beinning to make their way into America's newsrooms. Very few women were involved in covering the civil rights struggles of those years. And only one white woman wrote for the most influential black newpaper of the day. Writing under the name Gertrude Wilson, the author, a white, Upper East Side New York mother of four, spent a decade writing a column for the New York Amsterdam News, covering pivotal events in one of the most tumultuous periods of America's history. She was with Malcolm X's widow hours after the radical black leader was assassinated, and was at Coretta Scott King's shoulder in the Memphis protest march two days after Dr. Martin Luther King was killed. She rode on Bobby Kennedy's funeral train, and was beaten by a policeman at the 1968 Democratic Convention. She interpreted both the black and white world for America at a time when the country was literally at war with itself, providing a voice that was fresh, clear-spoken and controversial. "A lot of people both black and white thought I didn't have a right to be doing this kind of thing," she said later. "So I explained in a column one time, 'This is my country, and this is my fight, too.'"

The Charlotte Inn, regularly ranked as one of the finest small hotels in the world, is the subject of a new photography book that showcases the grounds, buildings, and unusual collections of art and antiques admired by both guests and travel specialists. The book contains 168 pages of photographs shot over two years by well-known photographer Nina Bramhall, who spent two years shooting the inn. The book chronicles the results of 30 years of renovation and restoration of the premier inn on Martha’s Vineyard by owners Gery and Paul Conover. The book, with accompanying CD, is based on the life of a young girl named Laura Jernegan, who lived aboard her captain/father's whaling ship for three years in the 1800s and kept a journal about her adventure. The journal is now part of the collection of the Martha s Vineyard Museum. and is only one of two in existence that tell about whaling from a child's point of view. The book really stresses girl power: Laura was six when her parents asked her if she wanted to go on the whaling voyage. They let her make her own decision. Once she did, they encouraged her to make the most of her adventure. Laura s journal and the story it tells is a true treasure. It also is a New England story that few know. It's beautifully illustrated with original watercolors.
