<p>The book, with accompanying CD, is based on the life of a young girl named Laura Jernegan, who lived aboard her captain/father's whaling ship for three years in the 1800s and kept a journal about her adventure. The journal is now part of the collection of the Martha s Vineyard Museum. and is only one of two in existence that tell about whaling from a child's point of view. The book really stresses girl power: Laura was six when her parents asked her if she wanted to go on the whaling voyage. They let her make her own decision. Once she did, they encouraged her to make the most of her adventure. Laura s journal and the story it tells is a true treasure. It also is a New England story that few know. It's beautifully illustrated with original watercolors.</p>
