The purpose of this book is to systematically explain whether and how attitudes toward the power of the European Parliament (EP) affect voter turnout in EP elections. The EP is the only European Union institution that ensures democratic representation within the EU; members of the EP have been directly elected by European citizens every five years since 1979. Based on turnout, however, it appears that few people care about the EP elections. Turnout rate for these elections is not only lower than that for national elections, but it has also steadily declined from 1979 to 1999. Do people abstain from voting because less is at stake in the EP elections? Are Euroskeptics less likely to vote in EP elections? My findings confirm that attitudes toward the EP influence and support for the EU influence the decision to turnout in the EP elections, even after controlling for contextual and demographic variables.

To lose teeth and be obliged to use removable prostheses might impact dramatically on your everyday activities. Prosthodontics is aiming to enable the patients to eat whatever they like, but also to make them feel socially comfortable with artificial teeth. However, there is an individual diversity which makes it impossible to assess the impact of tooth loss without concern for individual attributes. The aim of this thesis was to study the impact of oral prostheses on oral health- related quality of life (OHRQOL). Additional aims were to study social inequalities in oral health, attitudes towards costs for dental care and care utilization. The number of remaining teeth was more important than the type of denture when explaining OHRQOL. The type of replacement, in terms of fixed or removable denture, was less important for those with few or no remaining teeth, than for all others. Interactions were observed between number of remaining teeth and type of denture when explaining OHRQOL. As a whole the thesis shows that social and dental conditions and cost for dental care play a great role for dental care utilization as well as for OHRQOL.

Research was conducted in order to simulate real-life impacts during shifts of gaze in humans. The objective of the research was achieved by applying assisting and opposing torque loads during gaze shifts of human subjects through a servomotor. The subjects performed a simple visual task to guide their gaze shifts in the dark. The visual task led the subject`s gaze towards eccentricities of a range within which the head`s contribution to the gaze coordinated movement is indispensable. The novel gaze movement trajectories produced support the existence of a feedback control mechanism in the eye-head coordination system that keeps track of the on-going movement and adjusts the movement`s kinematics on-line accordingly. The addition of a neck-muscle generated mechanism that interferes with the vestibulo-ocular reflex and affects the eye`s trajectory post-saccadically is hereby proposed as a complement to the existing neurophysiological feedback models.

The Nath yogis, with their roots in the tantric milieu of medieval North India, are the instigators of haaha yoga. Their ultimate goal is the transmutation of sexual fluids into the elixir of immortality. The masters of this yoga are siddhas, the possessors of siddhis, the occult powers that culminate in deification. Scholars have noticed the importance of the occult and magic among the Naths, but these categories are rarely given appropriate theoretical considerations. The academic study of esotericism, conversely, directly engages the occult but often restricts itself to Western traditions. This study argues that there are advantages in applying the conceptual vocabulary and theoretical conclusions of esoteric studies to the scholarship on tantra and yoga. The model of esotericism is applied to the Nath yogis through a threefold thematic division of the subject matter: their understanding of body and sexuality, speech and rhetoric, and mind and ideology. Yoga is comparable to magic understood as a quest for power, based on the cultivated imagination and the principle of unions. The study concludes by suggesting that esotericism should be seen as a cross-cultural phenomenon.

To understand our world, it is essential to know the laws of nature. Over centuries these laws have been deduced from measurements, but there are still a lot of open question. One of these open questions is the exact measurement of profiles under very clean conditions, which is hereby solved. This book describes in detail the design, construction and implementation of an optical profilometer which can measure complex surface profiles under ultra high vacuum conditions. The surface profile (in vacuum) is obtained by scanning an optical sensor across a viewport. The instrument was designed with the aim of characterizing electrostatically deformed silicon wafers. To bend the selected wafers into the required shape a tuneable electrical field of up to 25 MV/m is necessary. To prevent electric breakthrough of the electrostatic field a clean UHV environment is required. This book should be interesting for scientists, engineers and whoever is interested in measuring.

The World Health Organization reports that while normal conversations occur at fifty-six to sixty dB, conversations in hospitals generally occur at higher levels due to the louder baseline noise from equipment and hospital activity. They recommend that noise levels in patient rooms be maintained at levels at or below 35 dB. Environmental modifications can effectively decrease noise levels, yet the process of caring for hospitalized patients necessitates frequent and ongoing interpersonal dialogues. Minimizing the patient exposure to interpersonal communications between employees requires a change in employee behaviors. Hospital based studies have reported some success in reducing noise levels by establishing equipment and purchase standards related to noise and designing units to control sounds. While effective, structural changes and equipment purchases can be cost prohibitive for many facilities. The goal of this pilot study was to develop, implement and evaluate an educational program on noise reduction.
