Flight Patterns highlights contemporary artists primarily working in the Pacific Basin--Southern California, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia--whose work addresses the specific topographical conditions and experience of living in this geographically and geopolitically dynamic region. As its conceptual foundation, Flight Patterns rethinks topographical practices of photography since the 1970s, looking at current manifestations of the topographical impulse in landscape-oriented work. The exhibition and its accompanying catalogue include new projects, recent work from the 1990s, and historically significant works of photography, film, video, and painting by 23 artists, including Doug Aitken, Rodney Graham, Anthony Hernandez, Tracey Moffatt, Paul Outerbridge, Allan Sekula, Miles Coolidge, Simon Leung. Flight Patterns introduces the work of West Coast American artists as well as those artists working in regions where there is a parallel history of landscapes and their representation, and where similar postcolonial issues are at stake. A landmark artistic, social, and geographical document, Flight Patterns highlights a diversity of artistic approaches--both formalist and conceptual--to one of the most fascinating and complex areas of the planet.

This monograph is the first U.S. museum survey of the work of Los Angeles-based sculptor Liz Larner. It will examine Larner's work of the last 15 years, a period during which she has created a body of category-defying objects and installations. Larner's work is characterized by an intensity of purpose and a deep understanding of form.

In subtly lush paintings that charm viewers equally through their application of paint and their quirky iconography, Laura Owens touches on expressive abstraction, color field painting, and the occasional decorative glimpse of a monkey. Charged as one of the contemporary artists responsible for a revival of the painting, Owens has developed an enigmatic style all her own, moving from landscape to abstraction with energetic thick brush strokes, fanciful childlike doodles, or sophisticated fine-line drawings, culling her influences from any number of visual sources, including chinese landscape painting, japanese wood block prints, and patterned textiles. This volume includes new paintings created for her upcoming solo show at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.

A crafty master craftsman with the heart of a conceptualist, Roy McMakin makes furniture that pokes fun at itself and renovates historic houses to challenge archetypes. A sculptor, conceptual artist, and furniture maker, his clients have ranged from Lisa Eisner and Tommy Lee Jones to the Getty Museum's Los Angeles offices. This first monograph on the artist, published on the occasion of the first museum exhibition of his work, traces how his creations have evolved over the years, from the nonfunctional yet allusive sculptural works of the early 1980s, moving through the production furniture made for his Los Angeles-based company, Domestic Furniture Co., and culminating in the “hillbilly modernist” sensibility of his present pieces. It considers his approach to materials, which ranges from the art-like, constructivist plywood furniture of his “classic” domestic period to the exotic hardwoods he currently employs. An interesting hybrid of artist and designer, McMakin makes magic, and it's all there behind A Door Meant as Adornment.

One of Canada's most humorous conceptual artists--as witty as he is smart--Rodney Graham gets his first North American museum retrospective and accompanying catalogue. Rodney Graham: A Little Thought tracks the career of a brilliant, idiosyncratic artist whose work spans a range of media including photography, film, book works, installation and pop music. In this volume, amply illustrated with many never-before-seen images from early in his career as well as new photography of his most recent works, scholarly essays provide a broad context for viewing: Cornelia Butler looks at Graham's relationship to landscape and Canadian identity, Lynne Cooke examines the construction of the artist's persona in works such as City Self/ Country Self (2001), and Shep Steiner discusses the joke as a conceptual strategy for Graham. Diedrich Diederichsen considers the artist's oeuvre within the context of musical structure, and Sara Krajewski describes how Graham's video works unfold. Finally, Grant Arnold offers an in-depth illustrated chronology, tracing the range of activities that have occupied Graham since his early days on the Vancouver scene.

This is an in-depth examination of the work of seven international emerging artists who have embraced a novel and challenging approach to painting. By employing a varied mix of painterly styles, modes, sources and materials, as well as working against a single recognizable "hand," the featured artists have each crafted a complex and rich practice that offers innumerable avenues for exploration and growth. The artists Kai Althoff, Gillian Carnegie, Mark Grotjahn, Lucy McKenzie, Rodney McMillian, Ivan Morley and Anselm Reyle are guided by a variety of individual motivations and conceptual frameworks rather than the outward appearances of their canvases. Th book includes an essay by MOCA Assistant Curator Michael Darling.
