Complications arising from French involvement in the Italian wars during the late 15th and early 16th centuries led to the creation of propagandistic works by the 'Rhetoriqueurs', a group of poet-historians affiliated with the royal courts of France at that time. A gradual yet critical change in the relationship between these writers, their patrons, and the public can be traced from a hierarchy of graded subordination to a circular, more balanced exchange of literary and political power. Professor Brown examines works of the following authors in detail: Andre de la Vigne, Pierre Gringore, Jean Marot, and Jean Lemaire de Belges.

These essays that examine eight novels, ranging from 'Le roman comique' to 'Les Liaisons dangereuses', have in common their emphasis on the literarity of the text rather than its referentiality. They draw attention not only to the structuring patterns of each novel, such as chronology and theme, but also to aspects of intertextuality (allusion, reference codes, etc.), and in particular to figuration: that is, both metaphorical constructions and function of narrative rhetoric, which provides insight into the ways the fiction text 'represents' itself.

Here they are presented for the first time in English translation, together with the Old French original text on facing pages. Preceding the prose translation of the 102 fables is a critical and historical overview in which the 'Fables' are considered in their relationship to the 'Lais' and the 'Espurgatoire seint Patriz,' to the Aesopic tradition, to their contemporary social context, and finally to folklore and the oral tradition.

This study, Literary History in the Wake of Roland Barthes..., addresses the concept of reading and its relationship with the literary text as proposed in the works of Roland Barthes, a major proponent of the New Criticism that transformed academic formalism in literary studies from Lansonism (a scientific approach to criticism espoused by Gustave Lanson) to the reader as a necessary participant in giving meaning to the written text. All French citations have been translated into English.
