Complications arising from French involvement in the Italian wars during the late 15th and early 16th centuries led to the creation of propagandistic works by the 'Rhetoriqueurs', a group of poet-historians affiliated with the royal courts of France at that time. A gradual yet critical change in the relationship between these writers, their patrons, and the public can be traced from a hierarchy of graded subordination to a circular, more balanced exchange of literary and political power. Professor Brown examines works of the following authors in detail: Andre de la Vigne, Pierre Gringore, Jean Marot, and Jean Lemaire de Belges.
