In Orange Wine, a novel set in Colombia during the early part of the twentieth century, Ines Camargo divides her life between two men. First she falls in love with and marries the dashing Alessandro Scala, son of Italian immigrants who leaves her for her sister Isabel. Ines then moves to Bogota with her newborn daughter and three-year-old son. While living there she meets Regulo Vaca Pineros, an ambitious man from Somondoco who is working for the Belgians that own the Railroad Company in Colombia. Ines and Regulo remain together until Alessandro returns and her sisters pressure Ines to go back to him. Regulo and Ines live apart for many years. However, their dialogue continues through letters long after Regulo has found comfort in other women's arms. This book is witty, erudite, wise, frightening, and beautiful. If I had a friend leaving on a solitary journey I would give her this book and say "Take this with you as a companion." It is the story of a woman living alone with a dog, in a neighborhood, with headlines and shadows. People turn up naked and unsurprised here. Tame animals, birds, dogs and cats, notice their owner is missing. Sometimes it's the pet that disappears. Physically, this world where wrens fly in the window is in Brooklyn, from the Bridge to the canal, but the imaginative scope of the wren-world is wide, especially through its playful encounters with newspaper headlines. In both neighborhood walks and national news, there is violence, and nakedness, and solitude. In life, difficult as it is, there are funny things to look at everywhere. How to notice such points of interest? It is good to have an eagle-eyed companion with a quick tongue. Words are delicious here. This is brilliant, gracious, and dangerous poetry.

In this book Peter Stitt writes two stories, one an interpretation of arcane historical events, the other an account of some complex events in his own recent life. Both stories are chaotic, written in a style that moves in eccentric and repetitive ways, but orchestrated toward a conclusion that is like the end of a hard-fought basketball game. Readers will occasionally wonder how the author will finish negotiating these hard roads, if he will be able to bring off their merging.
