From the Forward: The collection of ancient Chinese bronzes held by the St. Louis Art Museum has steadily grown in both size and significance since it's inception in 1916. For the museum, this is the first publication of the bronzes as a group since J. Edward Kidder, Jr's 'Early Chinese Bronzes' in 1956. We welcome the opportunity to present this portion of the collection and a new consideration of these works of art. The present volume contains a valuable range of information placing the bronzes in a variety of contexts. Each section contributes to a fuller knowledge of the works, their original identity, their physical history as surviving artifacts of great age, and their value as objects of appreciation and acquisition.

The Saint Louis Art Museum recently published Plains Indian Art of the Early Reservation Era, an interdisciplinary and cross-cultural examination of one of the Midwest's great public collections of Native American art. In 2010, Carolyn Danforth gave the museum 251 works of Plains Indian art collected by her late husband, Donald Danforth Jr. The catalogue examines not only Donald Danforth Jr. and his sensibilities as a collector of Native American art, but also situates the artworks as evidence of remarkable creativity in the context of tumultuous historical change.St. Louis businessman and philanthropist Donald Danforth Jr. (1932-2001) developed a love for Native American culture and the West in his childhood. He later amassed a collection made by members of Indigenous groups from the Plains and Plateau when Native Americans were adapting their mobile, equestrian lifestyles to the confines of reservations. The Danforth Collection is particularly strong in beadwork and quillwork on hide, including moccasins, pipe bags, assorted bags, pouches and cases, jewelry, children's items and horse regalia. Highlights include Lakota (Sioux) moccasins, a Transmontane parfleche, an Inde (Apache) dress and an Apsáalooke (Crow) martingale.

The Osage people, who have flourished in several locations and within a multiplicity of environments in the American Midwest, have infused their arts with an aesthetic vigor bound to an exquisite simplicity. "Art of the Osage", the first comprehensive presentation of the art of the Osage people, explores the interconnections among their material culture, social organization, cosmology, aesthetics, and rituals. This volume draws together over two centuries' worth of Osage art, tracing the patterns of Osage life and culture as they existed from contact to the present. The Osage people thrived in the central Mississippi Valley fur trade from the late seventeenth through the early nineteenth centuries, were forcibly relocated into northern Oklahoma in the nineteenth century, and prospered again from mineral and oil wealth in the twentieth century. As with other civilizations that have balanced abundance with hardship, the Osage experience yielded a highly refined artistic tradition, rich in meaning and complex in its commitment to utility. Cradle boards, headdresses, riding quirts and war clubs, beadwork and ribbon work, blankets, peyote fans, rattles, wedding garments, and dance costumes display the range and beauty of Osage material culture. In contrast to many other Native American artistic traditions, Osage art has never been commercialized: artisans have typically made items only for members of their families or other members of the Osage community. Although contemporary Osage art shows direct continuity in decorative motifs and basic forms with early historic Osage art, it is still a dynamic and evolving artistic tradition. Uninfluenced by external market forces, it represents one of a declining number of true indigenous living artistic traditions. The works illustrated here reveal the bold yet subtle aesthetic of Osage art, one of the most distinctive and significant Native artistic traditions in the United States.
