And an aged Navajo, in allowing cattle to be driven across his land, asks only that they go by his hogans door so he can hear and smell them.

New Mexico: A Biographical Dictionary is the second volume of a multi-volume encyclopedia of the people of New Mexico-the 47th State in the Union. It is a cross section of people who have had an influence on life-and sometimes death-in the Land of Enchantment, from the time the fi rst Europeans arrived around 1540 until 1980. People considered for inclusion in the Dictionary come from both sexes, all races and many cultures. They come from every corner of the colony/territory/state (plus a few that never set foot in New Mexico). The basic qualification for inclusion is they have left a mark on the state, for good or ill. A rag-tag group of Apache warriors, led by an elderly man in his late seventies, took on the U.S. Army's Ninth Cavalry in revenge for the death of the great Apache war chief Victorio. Using guerilla warfare, they led raids through New Mexico, slaughtering men, women, and children and evading the Cavalry and the Buffalo Soldiers. In the end, they won! Interesting historical characters abound. Billy the Kid was killing people in the southern part of the territory. The New Mexico Territory was governed by Lew Wallace (author of Ben-Hur and territorial governor). Colonel Edward T. Hatch (the chile town of Hatch is named for him) was in charge of the U.S. Army's Ninth Cavalry. And the great Apache war chief Victorio had been killed by the Mexican Army. After Victorio (a supposed treasure trove is named after him) was killed, the elder war chief Nana led the Apache to victory.

Sacred Feminine examines the role that culture, religion, sociology, art and gender played in the development of the religious Santero art, in particular, the images of women. Santero art beautifully portrayed the feminine both in nature and spirit. The Spanish loved the Virgin profoundly and fervently from the 12th century onward, within the Cult of Mary, in Spain and throughout Europe. This devotion reached its peak just before and during the discovery and conquest of the New World.

The village of Abiquiú, New Mexico, is easily missed by the casual traveler who might think that Abiquiú consists of only the post office and a few stores along Highway 84, about 46 miles northwest of Santa Fe. If one were to go up the road, pass the post office, onto the above mesa, one would be stepping back into an era of early Spanish and Native American history. Abiquiú is established on the site of an old abandoned Indian Pueblo. In the mid-18th century it became a settlement of Spaniards and Genízaros. (A Genízaro claims ancestry of both the Colonial Spanish settlers and Native American Indian tribes of the area.) Like many northern New Mexico villages, Abiquiú has attracted various artists who come to this part of the world to capture the beauty of the landscape One such artist was Georgia O'Keeffe, who first came to this area in early 1930s. She bought a home in the village of Abiquiú in the mid-1940s and lived there for over 40 years. Many journalists and authors have come to the village, interviewed some of the locals and then returned to their big city desks and written about the quaint village life, its inhabitants and its famous world-renowned artist. However, there has never been a book written from the perspective of a native from the village. Not only is Napoleón Garcia a native of Abiquiú, he knew and worked for Georgia O'Keeffe over the 40 years that she made Abiquiú her home, living "around the corner" from his home on the plaza in the pueblo. Napoleón has been interviewed by many of the big city journalists; but has always felt that the resulting work never truly told the story of his village and what it was like having such a famous resident as a fellow villager. With the help of his friend, Analinda, he now has that opportunity to tell his own story.
