Comic artist, writer, and scholar Stephen Bissette (Swamp Thing, Tyrant) contributes an introduction that tackles the entire genre of caveman-and-dinosaur comics and how they have intersected with and inspired other media since Reed kicked that first avalanche-starting boulder down the cliff. In addition, this book includes a short biography of Reed by cartoons historian Mark Bryant as well as an extensive interview with Reed himself, exploring his inspirations and working methods.

Like many of his contemporaries serving in the bullpen of a daily newspaper, Frederick Richardson was required to be a jack of all trades. As a staff artist for the Chicago Daily News in the 1890s, Richardson might have been asked to provide an editorial cartoon one day, an illustration for a children’s story the next, and a full-page illustration for the features section the day after that. 
Many of these artists survived in such an environment by learning to “hack” the work out, keeping it simple and rote. After all, it would probably end up in the dust bin the next day anyway. But Richardson proved to be a cut above the typical ink slinger at a daily newspaper. Over a 15-year stint, Richardson’s work blossomed, becoming more complex and assured. Instead of cutting corners in his illustrations and cartoons, he somehow managed to find a way to absorb the popular artistic movements of his time, such as Europe’s burgeoning Art Nouveau, and marry them to his own increasingly detailed style. 
And the detail Richardson lavished on many of his newspaper illustrations was clearly beyond any reasonable expectation from publisher or subscriber. Newspapers of that time were not known for their printing quality: the high-volume presses and cheap, pulpy paper stock did no artists’ work any favors. But this didn’t deter Richardson from investing tremendous amounts of attention to his extravagant pen-and-ink drawings. The evidence shows that he was obviously out to please himself before all others, and his standards were indeed formidable. 
Although Richardson eventually left the newspaper grind in 1903 and moved to New York City to begin a new phase in his career as an illustrator of children’s books, this collection—the first of its kind in well over a century—brings together the best of Richardson’s work published in the mid- to late 1890s for the Chicago Daily News. Reproduced from an especially rare 1899 collection that was printed with a level of care and refinement on par with his work, The Lost Art of Frederick Richardson also includes a short biography by well-known scholar Martin Gardner and an introduction by prolific fiction writer Ruth Berman. Modern readers, after seeing these drawings, will be left wondering what today’s newspapers might be like if they aspired to this level of enchantment and artistry.

The Lost Art of Heinrich Kley, Volumes One &amp; Two, collect over 450 drawings and paintings from a wide array of sources. Neither volume significantly overlaps with past books on Kley, as nearly none of these drawings have been collected and reprinted since their original publication a century or more ago. Both volumes also provide groundbreaking scholarship on Kley's life and work by German art historian Alexander Kunkel--whose recent research is presented in these volumes for the first time in English--along with incisive appreciations by contemporary artists Michael Wm. Kaluta and Jesse Hamm. 
Volume One focuses on Kley's ink drawings, and reprints for the first time a substantial selection of his illustration work for children's books and adult genre fiction, a side of Kley's career previously unexplored in other collections. This volume also includes a wide sampling of Kley's cartoons and magazine work, with newly collected examples taken directly from a variety of rare sources such as "Jugend," "Simplicissimus," and the historic "Der Orchideengarten" (the world's first fantasy fiction magazine). In all, more than 300 Kley illustrations and cartoons fill this first volume. 
Volume Two also breaks new ground by being the first book to present a large number of Kley's paintings and preparatory drawings, some reproduced directly from the original art. These color works reveal a heretofore rarely glimpsed pool of talent, and expand on the subject matter traditionally associated with the artist by including examples of his landscapes and industrial paintings. This volume's preparatory drawings are culled from the Library of Congress? untapped Kley archive, and show the artist working out concepts for book illustrations, reworking ink drawings into color paintings, and doodling for his own amusement. Approximately 150 drawings, many in color, appear in this volume. 
Both volumes represent an important advancement to the English-language scholarship on Heinrich Kley, and the abundance of art within should delight admirers of Kley, new and old alike.

The Lost Art of Ray Willner: The Adventures of Robin Hood

Collected for the First Time All 14 Beautifully Restored Stories in an oversized format Ray Willner was a casualty of the culture wars. With a comics career dating to 1939, Willner produced impressive work for publishers small and large throughout the 1940s. By 1949 he landed one of the only steady gigs in his career for an unusual publisher: The Brown Shoe Company. While working initially on their Buster Brown Comic Book―a giveaway created to drum up business in stores selling Brown’s footwear for kids―Willner found a simpatico spirit in fellow artist Reed Crandall. Although their collaboration on the Brown Shoe Co. series The Adventures of Robin Hood lasted less than a year―cancelled in the wake of the scaremongering backlash against comics in the 1950s―the seven issues produced by Willner with Crandall represent a seldom seen high-water mark in comics art. They were the last comics Willner would ever draw. The Lost Art of Ray Willner collects all of those Robin Hood stories for the first time since their original publication in 1956 and includes an introductory essay on Willner’s life and career.
