In this unusual book, curator and photographer Gordon MacDonald has brought together the work of contemporary photographers, archival photographs from NASA and astrological images from the 19th century. It's Wrong To Wish on Space Hardware explores the idea of a reality only experienced through photography and visions of a place we can never visit. Key to the spirit of the book is the work of Joan Fontcuberta, whose Constellations first appear to be vast panoramas of a clear night sky, but are in fact photograms of dead insects crushed against a windscreen. Similarly, the photographs in Richard Purdy's series Cr'pe/PlanAte look like hugely magnified images of distant planets, but are in fact studio pictures of pancakes. The grubby textures of the distant everyday also undermine the visionary in Adam Broomberg and Olivier Chanarin's Star City, which shows the once glorious achievements of the Soviet space program to be held together by disused, bargain-basement technology. Steve Pyke's photographs are the result of a personal quest to meet and photograph the principal characters of NASA's fabulous history. And archival photographs from NASA take on a Hollywood aesthetic, while Victorian constructed images appear to record the wonders of 19th-century astronomy.

With two nuclear power stations rising from a shingle headland of seventy-two square kilometres, the remote, windswept landscape of Dungeness is a place of strange contrasts and juxtapositions of scale. Working on a Photoworks commission, British artist Nigel Green spent a year photographing in and around the power stations of Dungeness and now this illustrated book brings together his extraordinary and ambiguous body of work.In the book Green's work at Dungeness is explored in an essay by Photoworks's Director David Chandler, while The Guardian's Architecture and Design Editor, Jonathan Glancey, contributes to a personal 'Guide to Dungeness' in which he dwells on the history and uniqueness of this 'natural dead end', 'brooding at the very edge of the map of England'.

<p>The Sound of Two Songs by Mark Power is the result of the artist's love affair with Poland. Power became transfixed by Poland whilst making a one-month project in the country for a 2004 Magnum commission, but he believed his initial investigations only scraped the surface of a country approximately the same physical size as the other nine new EU members added together. Consequently, he made approximately twenty further visits over five years. The archive now consists of 2000 large format, 5x4 negatives. The result is a beautiful series of photographs, eloquently describing the changing social values of a country caught between the past, the present and the future, both in terms of attitudes and of the contradictions in its landscape. As Power says, 'Poland is a beautiful country. Poland is an ugly country.' This beautiful book moves effortlessly between images of the urban and the rural, the old and the new, setting the crumbling inner city housing estates of the communist era against the new developments of colourful apartments and gleaming shopping centres. Power's project also explores the effect of global capitalism on the Polish landscape with advertising hoardings dominating the cityscape, setting a sharp contrast between the decay and aspiration of the country.</p>
