Ike Taiga and Tokuyama Gyokuran: Japanese Masters of the Brush

Ike Taiga (1723–1776) and his wife Tokuyama Gyokuran (1727–1784) were preeminent artists in 18th-century Japan. This landmark book––the only comprehensive survey available in English—focuses on the lives and times of these artists and accompanies the first-ever exhibition devoted to their work in the United States. Considered by contemporaries to be an eccentric marvel, indifferent to worldly preoccupations, Taiga is best known as an exponent of the so-called Nanga school of Chinese literati painting. He was hugely prolific and experimental, working in an impressive range of styles, techniques, compositions, and subjects to produce over 1,000 calligraphies and paintings, and many large-scale fusuma (sliding doors) and screens. While not as well known as her husband, Gyokuran was a significant artist and a well-regarded poet of Japanese verse. Taiga wrote poetry in Chinese, and translated poems by both artists are featured prominently in this volume.

Bruce Nauman: Topological Gardens: Installation Views

This striking publication examines two masterful armors for man and horse recently acquired by the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Among the earliest complete European examples in existence, these German works demonstrate the superior design and craftsmanship of princely armor in the early 16th century. The celebrated master Wilhelm von Worms the Elder (d. 1538) of Nuremberg made the luxurious, exquisitely decorated steel horse armor for Duke Ulrich of Württemberg (1487-1550). The man armor was crafted by Matthes Deutsch (last documented c. 1505) of Landshut, another distinguished armorer patronized by German princes; it is his latest and most sumptuous work. 
Princely Armor in the Age of Dürer discusses the function, design, decoration, and manufacture of these masterpieces and situates them within German art, culture, and politics, and within the development of European armor in the late Middle Ages and Renaissance.

Presenting an ambitious new project by Rachel Rose (b. 1986) commissioned jointly by the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo in Turin, this book offers a rare behind-the-scenes perspective on one of the most striking emerging voices in contemporary art. In the commissioned work, titled Wil-o-Wisp, Rose has created a fictional narrative set in 16th-century agrarian England. Following the life of a healer—whose fate is marked by love and loss, the practice of magic, and the consequence of persecution—the work ruminates on the ways that perception and coincidence affect our experience in the world. This intimate look into Rose’s creative process highlights the artist’s interest in storytelling, scene-setting, and visual effects by including storyboards, production stills, script excerpts, and on-set photography. In a new interview, Rose discusses the core concepts behind this work and offers a revelatory firsthand account of how the commission evolved from conception to realization.
