Built in the 1860s by Irish immigrants who quarried the brown sandstone by hand and hauled it four miles with ox teams, Saint Patrick's Church has stood in Monroe County, Iowa, for a century and a half. The great rock church known as "the cathedral in the wilderness" remains strong and solid, and the parishioners are even sturdier. In the middle of the nineteenth century, a small band of Irish immigrants made their way to Monroe County Iowa, where the hills and trees reminded them of Ireland. They broke the land, made their homes, and built a church -- a cathedral in the wilderness which stands today in the hamlet of Georgetown, Iowa. In 1950, Father Leo Ward wrote the story of the Irish community of Georgetown, centering the tale around a child born in 1860 as the church was being built -- Mary Ann Murray.

Before Buxton, there was Muchakinock... Coal camp, company town, and the largest settlement of African-Americans in Iowa, Muchakinock thrived from 1874 to 1900. Located on top of the coal seams which ran through southern Mahaska County, Iowa, Muchakinock existed because of Consolidation Coal - and when the mines played out and the company moved on, so did the town. Even the houses of Muchakinock were loaded onto railroad cars and moved to Buxton, in Monroe County, where new mines offered the promise of economic stability to black and white families alike.

Built in 1857, Mars Hill is the oldest log cabin church still in use in the nation. It is also one of the largest log buildings to have been constructed in Iowa. Though it is now an interdenominational chapel, it has been called the mother church of all Baptist faiths west of the Mississippi River. Severely damaged by an arson fire in 2006, Mars Hill has been rebuilt with original and period materials.

Within little more than a week in June, 1947, the Des Moines River flooded the city of Ottumwa, Iowa, twice. The 1947 floods proved a pivotal moment for Ottumwa’s history, leading to a massive project to straighten the river’s course, widen the channel, build protective levees, and repurpose land in the flood plain. Shortly after the double disaster, a small spiral-bound book of flood photos was published. Few copies remain. This new edition includes all of the photos from the 1947 book, plus 50 additional photos of the flood, news stories, and maps. New captions add context and information to all the photographs.
