<p>Before Buxton, there was Muchakinock... Coal camp, company town, and the largest settlement of African-Americans in Iowa, Muchakinock thrived from 1874 to 1900. Located on top of the coal seams which ran through southern Mahaska County, Iowa, Muchakinock existed because of Consolidation Coal - and when the mines played out and the company moved on, so did the town. Even the houses of Muchakinock were loaded onto railroad cars and moved to Buxton, in Monroe County, where new mines offered the promise of economic stability to black and white families alike.</p>

<p>Established at the start of the 20th century, the small mining town of Buxton displayed a degree of racial integration unheard of elsewhere in the nation. Black and white miners worked side by side digging coal in the Monroe County hills; black and white clerks manned the company store; black and white students shared classrooms. Buxton flourished for two decades, but by the 1920s the coal mines had played out and residents moved on. Though the town has long been abandoned, the memories, heritage, and ideals of Buxton live on. BUXTON BRANCHES includes the most complete set of birth records in existence for the town. It is a companion book to BUXTON ROOTS, which includes marriage, death, cemetery and census records.</p>
