On March 20, 1822, the Missouri Republican published a notice addressed “to enterprising young men” in the St. Louise area. “The subscriber,” it said “wishes to engage one hundred young men to ascend the Missouri River to its source, there to be employed for one, two, or three years. For particulars enquire of Major Andrew Henry… or of the subscriber near St. Louise.” The “subscriber” was General William H. Ashley, and among the “enterprising young men” who embarked with Major Henry less than a month later was eighteen-year-old James Bridger, former blacksmith’s apprentice. So began the Ashley-Henry fur empire and the long, colorful career of Jim Bridger. In the years that followed, Jim Bridger became a master mountain man, an expert trapper, and a guide without equal. He came to know the Rocky Mountain region and its inhabitants as a farmer knows his fields and flocks. Indeed, J. Cecil Alter tells us, “he was among the first white men to use the Indian trail over South Pass; he was first to taste the waters of the Great Salt lake, first to report a two-ocean stream, foremost in describing the Yellowstone Park phenomena, and the only man to run the Big Horn River rapid on a raft; and he originally selected the Crow Creek-Sherman-Dale Creek route the Laramie Mountains and Bridger’s Pass over the Continental Divide, which were adopted by the Union pacific Railroad.” Such knowledge, together with extraordinary skill and uncanny luck, preserved Jim Bridger in a country where nearly half of his mountain companions met violent death. It also gave rise to a brood of impossible tales about Old Gabe and his adventures-tales which he himself may unwittingly have helped along with his droll humor. Based on Mr. Alter’s original biography of 1925 (a facsimile edition of which, with addenda, appeared in 1950) and a wealth of new facts gleaned from many years of careful research, Jim Bridger is the authentic story of the Old Scout’s life. Only those events in which Bridger took part are included; improbable and uncorroborated stories, however interesting, have been omitted.

Of the many Native American women who were torn between two cultures on the American frontier, three have captured the popular imagination: Pocahontas, Sacajawea, and Sarah Winnemucca. This is the first full-scale biography of Sarah, the daughter of a Northern Paiute chief in western Nevada. During her short but adventurous life between about 1844 and 1891–Sarah Winnemucca worked tirelessly for the physical welfare and education of the Paiutes and all Indians. During a childhood made traumatic by the influx of white settlers and miners, she learned English and Spanish and two Indian languages in addition to her own. Through her work as an interpreter and a scout she eventually became an important political figure among the Indians of her region and traveled to Washington as their representative. Beautiful and persuasive, she appeared as the "Princess" Sarah in theaters and churches, telling the white world about the Paiutes and their problems. Because of her friendship with two Boston intellectual women, Elizabeth Peabody and Mrs. Horace Mann, she was able to publish her autobiography, Life Among the Piutes: Their Wrongs and Claims, one of the first books by a Native American. Her eastern allies also helped her to fund the Peabody School for Indian children in her home state. Balancing those successes were many personal and public failures. It was impossible to feed and clothe the Paiutes on the promises of Washington politicians. The charm that won the hearts and minds of her audiences also provoked personal attacks and innuendos. Two of Sarah's three marriages ended in divorce; the less formal liaisons failed also. Historians have found it difficult to separate the truth from the fictions perpetuated by white critics and by Sarah herself. In preparing this biography, Gae Whitney Canfield relied on newspaper reports and interviews, the Peabody and Mann papers, and public documents, as well as Sarah Winnemucca's own account of her life. The result is an exciting history of an extraordinary individual, who was at once a traditional Indian woman and a liberated Indian activist.

The ghost towns of Southern California-some dramatic and nearly intact, others devastated-are well worth visiting. Most are remnants of once-colorful mining towns, though there are also railroad towns, a World War II relocation center, a promoter's swindle, and a failed socialist colony. Some excellent attractions remain. One of the best-preserved stamp mills in the West is in Skidoo. Smelters, homes, stores, and the remarkable wooden American Hotel can be found in Cerro Gordo, which the author calls "California's best true ghost town." Seasoned back-roads traveler Philip Varney, who has visited nearly a hundred ghost towns in the area, provides a down-to-earth and helpful guide to more than sixty of the best in Southern California and nearby Inyo and Kern counties. He defines a ghost town as a town with a population markedly decreased from its peak, one whose initial reason for settlement no longer keeps people there. It can be completely deserted, have a resident or two, or retain genuine signs of vitality, but Varney has eliminated those towns he considers either too populated or too empty of significant remains. The sites are grouped in four chapters in Inyo County, Death Valley, the Mojave Desert and Kern River, and the regions surrounding Los Angeles and San Diego.
