On October 3, 2003, the Liberty Cell Center, the new home of the Liberty Bell, was opened to the public. The building, designed by Bohlin Cywinski Jackson, is one of the highlights of Philadelphia's reconfigured Independence Mall. This book offers a close look at the building. It presents an extensive set of reproductions and photographs, including records of the design and building process, that thoroughly document the building and its surroundings. The book also features essays that flesh out the building's rich context and its historical background. Located in New York City since 1972, Peter L. Gluck and Partners is known for the integrity of their designs and sensitivity to the relationship between architectural form and context. Rather than specializing in a particular building type or specific architectural style, the firm provides appropriate responses to often difficult and conflicting requirements. The firm has designed buildings throughout the United States, ranging from houses, schools, religious buildings and community centers to hotels, corporate interiors, university buildings, and historic restorations. Many projects have won national and international design awards. This extensive overview of the firm's practice includes architectural drawings, digital and physical models, and photographs of both finished and in-progress projects.

The Modern Impulse

CoReFab combines three words/fields: Concepts + Representation + Fabrication. The book documents five completed projects by AEDS Ammar Eloueini designed and implemented between 2003-2005. The projects are here grouped for evident similarities as well as differences. They are similar in scale, budget, materials and fabrication. They are all designed for a short life-span and have a distinct familial look. Most importantly, they share a consistent research agenda in the use of certain materials, structural techniques and geometries. They differ in their wide-ranging purpose and institutional framework: they are commissioned by a variety of clients ranging from choreographers, fashion designers and art institutions to perform very different tasks. AUTHOR: Ammar Eloueini (born 1968), received a Master of Science in Advanced Architectural Design from Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture in 1995. Teaching at the Ecole d'Architecture Paris-Villemin since 1996, co-founder of the digit-all studio. Participated to the International Exhibition "Transarchitectures 02" launched in Paris in June 1997. Over the past three years, Ammar Eloueini produced projects that challenge traditional design processes. Integrating digital media to investegate new approaches, based on animation software and the use of computers as a design tool. Extending his activities in the theoretical field, he participated in various international ideas competitions, where a conceptual and projectual approach, based on dynamic, non linear systems, answering new architectural and urban complexities was tested. Winner of the Villa Medicis Hors les Murs (AFAA, French Ministry of Culture) in 1998, he is working on a research project (Living in Strereoreality). Claude-Nicolas Ledoux's engraving Coup d'oeil du theatre Besancon, in which the architect's building is seen reflected in the eye of a viewer, is the centerpiece of in this intellectual archaeology. Rodolphe el-Khoury's close reading of Ledoux's celebrated icon uses it to excavate the foundations of architectural transparency, Modernism's most potent and lasting "invention," which is here traced back to an intellectual milieu that precedes the industrial revolution's glass and steel building technology. The image becomes a site of entry into the culture of the eighteenth century--debates in public health, the political ideas of Rousseau, the philosophy of Condillac, the project of the Encyclopaedie--yielding insights into important philosophical and architectural issues. The book includes a translation of Ledoux's chapter on the theater from his magnum opus, Considarae Sous le Rapport de l'art, des Moers, et de la Legislation.
