Italian military planners saw the need for highly mobile artillery early in the 20th Century. Accordingly, Italy began mounting anti-aircraft weapons on truck chassis prior to WWI, giving birth to the autocannone, a weapon concept that soldiered through WWI and WWII. Inspired by the German half-tracks equipped with 88mm guns, the Italians reprised the autocannone with their 90/53 guns on a heavy truck chassis. Other vehicles, some captured, were mated with a wide variety of weapons, often in the field.

The Avenger was the foremost Torpedo Bomber in the US Navy's arsenal during WWII. Designed by Grumman as a replacement for the Douglas TBD Devastator, Avenger production began prior to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and it remained in US Navy service until October 1954. Demand for the large torpedo bomber was so strong that General Motor's newly-formed Eastern Aircraft Division was contracted as a second source for the Avenger, ultimately accounting for more than half of the total production. In addition to its obvious use as a torpedo bomber, the Avenger also served as a horizontal bomber, dropping conventional bombs, as well as mines and notably, depth charges, while operating in an antisubmarine role. This all-new edition is filled with 212 vintage photos, 29 of them in color, these are augmented by five color profiles and a like number of detailed line drawings, 80 pages.

The purpose of electronic countermeasures (ECM) is to jam, spoof, trick, or otherwise fool an enemy about the location or capabilities of armed combat units. Although the US employs ECM on the land, air, and sea, modern military aircraft are the primary platform in the ECM battle because they can scan a larger patch of earth. This book briefly explains the history and development of various ECM techniques with particular emphasis on US Navy, Air Force, and Marine aircraft that have taken electronic countermeasures into battle from the 1950s through present. Specific aircraft included are ECM variants from the 1950s, Vietnam, the Cold War, Operation Desert Storm, Operation Deliberate Force (Yugoslavia), and modern aircraft including the Navy’s EA-18 Growler, which is capable of jamming frequencies and eliminating surface-to-air radar sites at Mach 1.8.

Named for US General Omar Bradley, the armored M2/M3 Bradley Fighting Vehicle was designed to transport infantry and scouts and was possessed of sufficient firepower to suppress enemy troops and armored vehicles. Introduced into US military service in 1981 the vehicle was built around the formidable Bushmaster 25mm chain gun mounted in the two-man turret. The vehicle’s three-man crew (commander, gunner, driver) was augmented by the ability to carry an infantry team of seven soldiers in the rear compartment protected by aluminum-alloy armored skin. Powered by a Cummins diesel V-8 engine, the Bradley had tremendous automotive performance as well. The M2 Infantry Fighting Vehicle has a crew of three and transports a six-man infantry squad. The M3 Cavalry Fighting Vehicle originally to be named after General Jacob Devers, but ultimately retaining the Bradley name, also has a crew of three but carries only a two-man scout team. Improvements in armament used on the Bradleys, such as the TOW and TOW2, are also covered.

The Douglas SBD ('Scout Bomber Douglas') Dauntless was the U.S. Navy's chief carrier-borne scout plane and dive bomber from the middle of 1940 until the middle of 1944. In addition, U.S. Marine units flew the Dauntless from aircraft carriers and bases on land, and the U.S. Army Air Force also operated its own version of the plane. Most remembered for the deadly blows it inflicted on Japanese aircraft carriers at the battle of Midway in June 1942, the SBD Dauntless boasted long range, good handling, and toughness. The land-based Army version of the aircraft, which omitted the arrestor hook, was dubbed the A-24 Banshee. Though design work on the Dauntless began in the mid-1930s, Germany's impressive use of Stuka dive bombers at the start of the war in Europe further brought home the need for an effective dive bomber in U.S. service. The Dauntless SBD-2 version saw combat from the very first day of the war for the United States, two of the aircraft being destroyed at Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941. Other SBD-2s took part in combat through the Battle of Midway in 1942. Truly combat capable, the SBD-3 saw action and considerable success at the Battle of the Coral Sea, Midway, and the Eastern Solomon Islands. In the Atlantic it took part in Operation Torch. Becoming operational in late 1942, the SBD-4 served aboard the USS Independence at Marcus, Wake, and Tarawa late in 1943. Meanwhile the U.S. Army Air Force made use of its version of the aircraft - the A-24A Banshee, first deployed in June of 1941. U.S. allies France, beginning in 1943, and Mexico, starting in 1944, also received the A-24B model. Lavishly illustrated with 200 photos, detailed line drawings and color profiles.

SBD Dauntless In Action

The Douglas A-26 Invader served the US with distinction in various combat roles during WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. Originally created as an attack aircraft, with the designation A-26, the Invader was designed to replace the A-20 Havoc, North American B-25 Mitchell, and Martin B-26 Marauder for the US Army Air Forces. However, production delays prevented the aircraft from reaching the field until June 1944. With as many as 14 forward-firing .50-caliber machine guns as well as bombs and rockets, the Invader was well suited for ground strikes when the Korean War broke out in 1951. The Invader flew into combat and carried the markings of the US Air Force as the redesignated B-26. Later, the French used the Invader during their war in Vietnam. Shortly after the US entered the conflict, Invaders returned to the sky over Vietnam in the hands of US as well as South Vietnamese crews. To base the aircraft type in Thailand, which prohibited the USAF bombers, the Invader was once more classified as an attack aircraft, and the A-26 designation returned.
