On the Sociology of Islam

Throughout history, Shari'ati reminds us in these lectures and writings, people in search of deliverance from constricting social and intellectual systems have all too often followed influential thinkers out of one form of capivity and directly into another. He warns that great case must be taken in this day of search and upheaval to examine the prevailing movements that promise solutions for humanity.
Marxism, which holds special appeal for the world's oppressed peoples and those sensitive to their suffering because of its emphasis on justice, merits particularly close scrutiny. Shari'ati analyzes its roots in materialism, its relation to the Hegelian dialectric, its preoccupation with matters of production, the sources of its diametrical opposition to Islam, Marx's objection to religion, and other crucial aspects to Marxism.
But his attention is not confined to Marxism alone. He discusses the established religions, bourgeois liberalism, and existentialism, beginning with their fundamental notions of man. He examines the characteristic refusal of the major freedom-seeking movements of the nineteenth and twentieth centures to accept any spiritual dimension in man. Throughout hs inquiry, Shari'ati offers comparisons with the ideology of Islam, drawing upon the principles and precepts contained in the Qur'an as well as cultural material from the history of Islamic society. Gradually and eloquently, he expounds his persoai view of Islam as the philosophy of human liberation.

At the time of his death in 1979, Ayatullah Taleghani was chairman of Iran's Revolutionary Council, a member of the Assembly of Experts elected to draft a constitution for a new Islamic Republic, and also leader of Friday prayers in Tehran. He had just delivered seven lectures on the Qur'an for television. He had recently travelled to northern Iran to mediate in conflicts with the Kurds. A fe months before that, in what were the final weeks of the old regime, he had arranged mourning ceremonies for masses of dead civilians and headed demonstrations calling for a new governmnet under the leadership of Khomeini. All this Taleghani accomplished in the space of mere ten months - - his release from prison for the last time had only come in November 1978. 
A foremost religious scholar with a reputation for independent thought, Taleghani spent most of his life in Tehran, where his outspoken opposition to the Pahlavi rulers resulted in his spending many years behind bars. There, with an inordinate amount of time for reflection and talk, he worked ceaselessly, writing his most notbale works and lecturing he fellow inmates. The prisons were packed with political dissenters, and many who have figured prominently in revolutionary Iran received theri schooling in Islam fro Taleghani.

Suppressed in Iran during the reign of the Shah, this book for the first time in a careful, annotated translation was published after the Islamic Revolution. It is a strong and emotional statement by an Iranian intellectual deeply concerned with what he saw as his country’s succumbing to "A plague from the West" or "occidentosis." Offering observations, insights, reasons for pride in Iran’s past and culture, and critical analyses of the Western role in th world. Jalal Al-i Ahmad expresses many of the concerns that agitated the intelligentsia during the two decades before the Islamic Revolution. 
The author begins by explaining his term "occidentosis: and describing how he sees the world: as divided between the poles of East and West. The division is not so much a geographical or an ideological schism, as a division between the produces and the consumers of machines. A brief review of history helps explain how and why Iran grew occidentotic. He cannot and does not ignore the role of oil. 
The many contradictions that result from the forced consumption of Western machines and goods in Iran are the subject of the longest and most carefully considered chapters in the book. Westerners, who industrailized step by step over hundreds of years, never saw such sharp contrasts as "a man grading Kharg Island with a monstrous bulldozer with blue bead hanging from the steering wheel." 
Breaking the spell of occidentosis is the subject of another chapter. The author rejects both the options of remaining passive consumers of the machine and eschewing the machine and reverting to pre-industrial modes of existence. Rather, he advocates gaining control of the machine so Iranians can use it as a means, not an end, "to abolish poverty and put material and spiritual welfare with the reach of all." 
As an educator Jalal Al-i Ahmad was particularly concerned with ow Iran's schools preserve its occidentotic society. He points out in this book how leaders whose first interest was not the welfare of the Iranian people or the preservation of its cultural traditions were turned out year after year by Iranian universities or returned to their country from American and European educational institutions. 
The book closes with a plea for everyone not just Iranians or Easterners, to awaken to the dangers of mechanosis, the ultimate end of which will be destruction of the world with a nuclear bomb.

Ayatullah Murtaza Mutahhari, assassinated in May 1979, soon after the triumph of a revolution he had donemuch to promote both intellectually and organizationally, was one of the most versatile and prolific of Iranian religious scholars in recent times.
