The topics of Jihad and Shahadat, struggle and martyrdom in Islam, are widely misunderstood in the West, although, due to the prominence of the Islamic world in contemporary international politics, they have aroused  considerable interest, and perhaps fear.  Each of the authors whose thoughts are presented in this volume helped to set the stage for the Islamic revolution in Iran. They were popular lecturers  who attracted especially large following among the youth because they preached Islam as a vibrant ideology with obvious relevance for contemporary world and  national political life. No topics are more important than those of jihad and shahadat. Thus, the writings translated here are essential for an understanding of contemporary of Shi’ite political thought, and for an understanding of  the  ideological developments which made possible the Islamic revolution in Iran.  But these works have a worth beyond what we may learn from them about Iran, or Shi'ism or Islam. The questions raised in this volume about martyrdom, about struggle against oppression and the role of religion in this struggle, are questions which must be raised by all people.

Ayatullah Murtaza Mutahhari, assassinated in May 1979, soon after the triumph of a revolution he had donemuch to promote both intellectually and organizationally, was one of the most versatile and prolific of Iranian religious scholars in recent times. The question of fate and destiny is a philosophical question, and should normally be looked for in the books of philosophy. However, in this book it has been taken out of its proper context and grouped with questions which are neither connected with regard to its subject nor with its object of its study. Here this question is being studied under the heading of "The causes of the decline of the Muslims". This heading includes various subjects, events and questions, namely historical, psychological, moral, social and religious. The only link which binds these subjects together is their positive or negative effects on the progress and the decline of the Muslim society. The aim here is to see whether a belief in destiny as required by philosophical reasoning is one of those ideas which lead its adherents to lethargy. Are the believers automatically dragged to decline and decay or is it a doctrine which has no ill effect if it is expounded in a sound manner.
