Leon Golub and Nancy Spero, artistic and marital partners for over 40 years, have created two sustained and uncompromising bodies of work that explore themes of power and vulnerability by confronting the social and political realities of our time. Golub's primary subject has been male aggression and its vulnerability; his large scale canvases are searing visions of brutality, violence and agony. Spero's art has been concerned with degrees of human suffering. In extended series such as Torture of Women, she links sadistic sexuality to the abuse of power, combining ancient and contemporary tales of gynophobic violence. Published to accompany the exhibition at the List Visual Arts Center at MIT. War and Memory includes an overview of the artists as well as an essay by curators Katy Kline and Helaine Posner.

Flying: Practical Training for Beginners, an artist's book by Luca Buvoli, documents his film of the same name and is one component of Buvoli's solo exhibition at the List Visual Arts Center at MIT in Spring 2000. Trapezoidal in shape, like the wing of an airplane, Flying contains two separate books under one cover: an "instruction manual" containing the film script, diagrams, animation cells, maquettes, and notes, and a smaller flipbook reproducing the final sequence of the film. Buvoli, whose artist books are avidly collected, has created a colorful, surreal film that presents the "33-Step Method" developed by the fictional professor M.a.S. to satisfy one of humanity's most ancient dreams, namely flying. Professor M.a.S. lectures at a darkened classroom using diagrams, animated films, and scientific commentary to instruct his audience on a series of movements which, when performed correctly, allow one to fly without the help of any mechanical device. Buvoli's work has been shown extensively in his native Italy and will also be familiar to American audiences from his exhibitions at the New Museum in New York, the Santa Moncia Museum of Art, and the Cleveland Center for the Arts.

<p>Documenting an exhibition of the same name, Inside Space showcases the work of six international artists and groups--Elmgreen &amp; Dragset, Teresita Fernandez, Henrik Oleson, Oona Stern, Monica Bonvicini, Juan Maidagan, and Dolores Zinny--all of whom problematize the basic concept of a ''room'' by variously deconstructing, reiterating, materially re-gendering, duplicating, de-rationalizing, de-functionalizing, or disorienting the visitor within them. All of the artists here are equally informed by art and architecture, and Inside Space explores the limits between these two media by presenting the artists' work in architectural-style documentation. Reproduced here are working drawings, photographs of the artists supervising the building and installation of their works, and two views of each finished piece. Inside Space addresses one of the main shifts in the visual arts over the past several years--the increasing propensity of artists to work outside of their field of specialty, delving into such areas as furniture design, animation, and gardening. This ''hybrid'' show and catalogue is a crucial document of artists dealing with built interior space.</p>
