The 1961 season was the first year of the new 1.5 litre regulations in Formula 1. Out of all the German car manufacturers, only one company, Porsche, had both the determination and the possibilitiy to enter this new class. In the beginning, a Porsche Spyder was converted to a monoposto, called a Type 718, and that was relatively successful. But soon Porsche was aiming for more and they built the last purely German-manufactured Formula One car from then up to the present day. The engine, the chassis and the brakes of the 804 were all self-made and thus this car became the last real Silver Arrow. In the end, it was all a bit too much and too expensive for the small sports car manufacturer from Stuttgart, but it was still an exiting part of motor sport history. Wonderful and previously unseen photographs illustrate the memories of those people involved while complete statistics give this book a comprehensive documentation on Porsche's amazing Formula One experiment. Most rally fans still have fond memories of the 70s. The Ford GT with chassis number 101 might itself have had a rather unfortunately career, but it was the precursor of Ford's winning streak at Le Mans in the late 1960s. It all began with Henry Ford II's idea to win the world's greatest sports car race and, when Ford's aim to take over Ferrari failed in 1963, the US automobile giant decided it would build its own sports car. This was the birth of the legendary Ford GT. Less than a year later, Ford brought two cars to the Le Mans Test Weekend--with one of them being chassis 101. Ford had used this very first GT chassis for most of the development work and for the first official presentation of the Ford GT. During 1986 there were several fatal accidents to competitors and spectators involving Group B cars during events of the World Rally Championship. The governing body of motorsport, the FIA, decided that the regulations concerning which cars were eligible to enter the WRC had to be changed and they opted to go for Group A where 5,000 cars of a particular model had to be manufactured in order to qualify. The change was implemented within six months of the decision being taken and thus at the beginning of 1987 season, there were very few cars that both qualified and were also competitive. The rally stars from the previous era like Walter Röhrl, Hannu Mikkola, Juha Kakkunen and Markku Alén were still there with new stars like Carlos Sainz, Didier Auriol, Tommi Mäkinen and Colin McRae emerging. Rallying technology was forced to undergo an almost complete re-start and it took some time before more than just one or two manufacturers could produce a winner. When they did, the side-effect was astounding with thousands of four-wheel drive, turbocharged road cars coming onto the global market.
