Forced to endure occupation by both the Soviets and the Nazis, the author's family also faced the terror of Ukrainian "ethnic cleansing" by nationalist forces. The horror of the Nazi forced-labor camps wherein millions of Europeans were enslaved by the Third Reich is vividly recounted, as is the family's time in displaced person's (DP) camps. In recent years baseball has recognized the talents of many black players who spent their entire careers in the Negro leagues. But the men who covered these stars, the black sportswriters whose eloquent, persistent, and occasionally bitter words helped spur the integration of the major leagues, have received little recognition. The eight men represented here (Sam Lacy, Wendell Smith, Frank A. Young, Joe Bostic, Chester L. Washington, W. Rollo Wilson, Dan Burley and Ed Harris) were pioneers in their own right. Writing for black weekly newspapers, they faced the same conditions as the leagues' players, from discrimination to endless travel. On November 9, 1908, five shots rang out near the Tennessee capitol building in Nashville. Two shots came from the pistol of U.S. Senator Edward Ward Carmack; three came from the gun of Robin Cooper, who had leaped in front of his father, Colonel Duncan B. Cooper, Carmack's target. When the shooting was over, Senator Carmack lay dead on the streets. Neither Duncan nor Robin Cooper served time in jail. Colonel Cooper was pardoned by Governor Malcolm Patterson; Robin was acquitted in a retrial. He also accepted money from the Mississippi State Sovereignty Commission, a state agency created to destroy the movement in the South. Nonetheless, he continued to publish the most important black newspaper in Mississippi, telling the news from the perspective of a radical black conservative.
