The Prison Notes

Corneliu Zelea Codreanu was the founder  and leader of the Legion of St. Michael the  Archangel, otherwise known as the Iron Guard, in Romania between 1927 and 1938.  While many of the revolutionary nationalist  movements of the period are long forgotten, Codreanu's movement continues to be studied today. The reason is because Codreanu  envisioned the Legion as being not simply  a political movement, but rather a knightly  order in which all members were suffused  with the spirit of God, self-sacrifice and the essence of the Romanian people. This is no more evident than in his Prison Notes, which he kept after being imprisoned on false charges by the government. Although the judiciary was unwilling to sentence him to more than ten years' labour, Codreanu was 'shot while trying to escape' shortly after these notes were written. His body was then rendered unrecognisable with acid and clandestinely buried under seven tons of concrete to hide the crime. The Prison Notes are the testimony of a man who, while disappointed by the corruption and ill treatment he faces, remains strengthened by the power of his faith and commitment to a higher cause. Also included in this volume are translations of all of Julius Evola's essays on the subject of Codreanu. Evola, who met Codreanu in Bucharest shortly before his arrest, recognised in Codreanu a kindred spirit who saw profane politics only as a means toward a restoration of genuine hierarchy and aristocracy. We have also appended a series of rarely-seen photos of the Iron Guard and Codreanu to this volume to complete the record of a movement which has withstood and transcended the test of time.

The Italian traditionalist philosopher Julius Evola translated the book into Italian, and published it 1939, adding his own Introduction and an additional chapter after an agreement with de Poncins. This translation is based on both editions, including Evola's Introduction and chapter as well. Evola also made a number of interesting alterations to the text, occasionally adding, removing, or rewriting small parts of the French original. We have noted these changes in the footnotes, as they offer an insight into the different ways in which de Poncins and Evola approached the same issues. Included in this edition is also two appendices: Evola's essay 'Considerations on the Occult War', which is a 1938 essay on this topic; and a review of the French edition of the book that was published by the first traditionalist philosopher, René Guénon, in 1936.

Professor Rudolf Kjellén är antagligen mest känd internationellt för sitt akademiska arbete inom statsvetenskapen, där han bland annat är grundare av disciplinen geopolitik. Förutom forskningen var han även en aktiv samhällsdebattör och samlade dessa texter för att kunna presentera ett enande program för den nationalistiska idéströmning han engagerat sig i och som började ta form i Sverige under början av 1900-talet. Bokens syfte är att, med Kjelléns egna ord, utgöra en nationalistisk "samling i bestämd riktning och avsikt, på nationens eget väsens grund." Bokens röda tråd är viljan till en politisk förändring av Sverige inom en rad olika områden, och i de utvalda texterna diskuteras allt från statslära till politisk etik, historiskt relevant filosofi, kultur och ekonomi, till ideologiska riktningar som konservatism, liberalism och nationalism. I en tid då ideologierna är satta på undantag och får allt mindre utrymme i samhällsdebatten, och då partierna i allt högre utsträckning lämnar sina ideologiska grunder i strävan efter större väljarunderlag, är en bok som Kjelléns en verklig frisk vind för den politiskt intresserade. Här finns välutvecklade ideologiska ställningstaganden och diskussioner inom en rad olika områden, och just det faktum att boken presenterar ett ideologiskt program och världsåskådning snarare än politiska kommentarer, innebär även att innehållet är tidlöst, och minst lika aktuellt idag som när det ursprungligen författades. I denna utgåva är dessutom en noggrann, men försiktig, modernisering av språket genomförd för att uppdatera texterna till nutidens språkbruk, och för att förbättra läsupplevelsen hos den samtida läsaren. Att varje kapitel är relativt fristående medför dessutom att boken kan läsas med god behållning i princip oavsett i vilken ordning kapitlen läses. Detta är onekligen en bok som är lätt att återkomma till för att fördjupa sig i specifika ämnen relaterade till Kjelléns politiska strävan.

The Anti-Humans

"The Anti-Humans: Student Re-education in Romanian Prisons" takes place in Romania short after the Communists came into power with the help from the Soviet Union. But the book is much more than a record of the horrible crimes committed against the Romanian people during this time. It is a warning; it is a voice from beyond the grave, from the living dead behind the Iron Curtain. The book was smuggled out of through the Iron Curtain and translated from Romanian into English. The readers will have at their disposal a complete account of the dehumanization through imprisonment and torture of many of Romania's citizens by the communist regime. The people selected by the authorities for dehumanization were part of a cleverly defined group, university students. This was because in Romania, university students were considered a highly respected elite, including youth who combined vigor with unsurpassed patriotism and a lucid rigor, both intellectually and spiritually. In a time were the communism once again are growing stronger, not least among younger people, which do not know much about the Cold War, and even less regarding the tragedies that took place behind the Iron Curtain, the publishing of The Anti-Humans is filling an important function.
