Barbara Ann Quinlan was born in the sheltered world of upstate New York in the 1950s. When the family moved to California, she easily slipped into the embodiment of a 1960's wild child. Yet far from a typical story of sex, drugs and rock and roll, she was to travel extensively in Europe and Israel, study under the innovative and influential theatre director, Jerzy Grotowski, have affairs with high-profile actors, and an icon of Israeli music before his tragic demise. 
Hers is a story of triumphs and tragedies, mountain-top joy and deepest pits of misery, outlandish behaviors, destructive compulsions, foolishness and ultimately, miracles. Urging her through it all was the relentless pursuit of what she was hungrily seeking; love, peace, and her place in the world.

At the age of 57, Peter Keating set out to sail, single-handed, across the Atlantic.\nIt was a lifelong dream of a lifelong sailor and though it was to be a solo journey, his waking and sleeping hours were spent in the 'company' of his memories and erstwhile companions and friends. From Werner and crocodile surfing, to Gerhardt and the Gulag. From Charlie of Morova Lagoon, to Fred from Fransesca. Their stories, along with the Mafiosa of Malta, Leo from the Chesapeake, the myth of Napoleon on St Helena and many more besides, were weaved into Peter's as they hauled along, day after day, from horizon to horizon on the voyage from Norfolk, Virginia to Lisbon, Portugal. 
They were there to help and inspire him and, when he was caught in the middle of Hurricane Barry, to ensure he reached out and survived. When at his lowest ebb, along came the ghost of Sam, a friendly old sailor who kept Peter entertained through the long, lonely hours of the dog watch.

This collection of fascinating reminisces captures the school days of those girls who attended the Presbyterian Ladies College (PLC) in Armidale, New South Wales during the period 1936 to 1964. 
Were their experiences to occur today they would surely cause gasps of horror. Not that there was anything immoral or illegal happening, the standards of accommodation, meals and uniform requirements were simply of their time; a time which included the war and post-war years with its attendant shortages, rationing and family losses. 
Despite the strictures, what shines through is the abiding emotional attachment the Old Girls have for their school and the friendships made, as well as the school's emphasis on encouraging individual strengths and talents, its stress on the belief that women should pursue a career and its complete lack of social snobbery. 
There are tales of girls 'getting up to no good' and as well as being amusing, these forays into naughtiness indicate that spirit and risk-taking cannot be extinguished, whatever the prevailing conditions. Ultimately it was these very conditions that provided a test of character and resilience. 
Ask PLC Old Girls of the 1936-1964 period what they think of it all and they'll laugh, give a shrug and say, as they do in some of the memories within this book, 'We survived.'
