James Riddle Drain was one of the most remarkable chiropractors from the first generation of chiropractors. Inspired after witnessing B.J. Palmer defending a chiropractor in court, he later traveled all over Texas to testify in courtrooms on behalf of jailed chiropractors. He even spent one night in jail for his own protection and he is the only chiropractor ever jailed for "almost practicing medicine without a license." His success and enthusiasm led to 12 members of his immediate family to become chiropractors. Drain established a thriving practice and was president of the TCC for 34 years. He taught and practiced chiropractic for 46 years.

D.D. Palmer's Traveling Library is comprised of a collection of the works that Palmer had bound together for travel studies. Some of these texts date back to the 1870s and 1880s. Since Palmer did not discover chiropractic until 1895, we could view these books as his foundational philosophical study. By reading what D.D. Palmer was reading, we might get to know him better. We may also understand the seeds that would grow into the philosophy, science, and art of chiropractic. Simon Senzon abridged these texts to assist the modern reader to more fully enjoy them. By shortening each book to essential quotes, students of Palmer's philosophy will be able to more readily make connections to his early, middle, and later writings. As an introduction to the Traveling Library, Simon Senzon wrote several chapters contextualizing the philosophy and developing a cultural outlook through which Palmer may have viewed the world. The latest literature on the 19th century metaphysical culture from which chiropractic emerged is explored. The main emphasis is Palmer's interest in Spiritualism and magnetic healing and the root ideas that inspired Palmer to develop his more advanced philosophy of Universal Intelligence and Innate Intelligence. One chapter of the book is comprised of a collection of D.D.'s quotes about UI and II. Another chapter explores his earliest writings on magnetic healing. This book is an important link in a more complete understanding of the philosophy of chiropractic.

Mind and My Pencil is a compilation of J.R. Drain's chiropractic writings from 1925-1956. Drain's articles, pamphlets, and weekly letters to chiropractors are incredible. Part I of this book was originally published as Section III of the second edition of Chiropractic Thoughts (1946). Drain added many of his writings to the 1927 first edition. The writings are inspiring, thought provoking, philosophical, and filled with business and practice advice for chiropractors. Some of the essays were written to replace "disease tracts," or articles used by chiropractors to educate patients about various diseases. The essays are about life, philosophy, chiropractic, and health. Two of the longer writings include a detailed essay on Nerve Tracing and a talk on Principles given at Palmer's Lyceum in 1946. Part II of the book is comprised of two pamphlets, Why Majors Change and The Jim Drain System of Adjusting. Anatomical illustrations from Gray's Anatomy (1918) were included in this edition. The illustrations help depict Drain's theory of Majors as dynamic subluxation patterns in response to Innate's adaptations. By including Drain's early writings on chiropractic along with his explanations of nerve tracing, adjusting, and majors in one book, the modern reader is offered a rare glimpse into the original principles and practices of chiropractic. The final part of the book was developed from several of his articles including an excerpt from the introduction to Drain's unpublished 1956 manuscript, We Walk Again. The excerpt is extraordinary because it provides his autobiographical account, thanks to mentors, and final thoughts.
